We were on the water going full speed, when suddenly motor revved up, quit going forward or reverse. Prop will not turn now, but motor will start. Do I need a new lower unit?

We all need a new lower unit!! But seriously - start the motor and see if it pumps cooling water if not the driveshaft splines might be sheared, if it does the pinion gear might be shot, but anyway you check it you will have to tear it down for inspection.

You might have spun the hub in the prop. Does the LU engage when put in forward/reverse?

Drop the lower unit, see if the vertical shaft has broken. If not obviously broken, turn the shaft to see if the prop shaft turns, if not then disassemble for inspection.

I would not fire the motor and wait for the stat to open to see a P stream, I might pull a stat, leave the cover off and see if water comes out within a few seconds of firing the motor, but I wouldn't run it more than 15 seconds or so.

Caution this is high tech stuff comming at you. With boat on the trailer and the safety kill lanyard removed and key off, put the shift lever in forward, walk around the back and kick the prop hard. If the prop spins but the prop nut doesn't replace the prop hub. If the prop and shaft both spin let us know and we'll guide you from there.
