15 merc bearing carrier question

Hey all. I was in the bay and i hit something going slow. Good part is everything worked fine in the lu to still stay out for couple hours. When i was took the outboard out of the water(15 merc) i noticed a little gear oil leak from behind the prop. I opened the screws and drained the oil but did not look like water got in it as gear oil did not change color. When i pressure tested it, it was not holding pressure. I think i blew a seal prop shaft. My question is, is there anyway to get a cheaper bearing carrier tool then paying 60-80 dollars for one? Or should i just keep using my outboard and keep checking oil for water?

If it is not holding pressure, drop it pressurized into a water tank to see where the leak actually is. Is the tool you are talking about to fit the slotted nut of the carrier. If so, you can make one out of a length of pipe, cutting matching notches in one end and a hole through the other end that you can fit a bar through to enable you to turn the tool. Remember the carrier thread is a LH thread.

Re: 15 merc bearing carrier question

On my 15 4 stroke, I made it out of galvanized 1 1/4" I think. I cut the tabs with a cutting wheel on my 4" grinder. I would not buy the $55 tool because I paid about $1000 dollars for a mercury LU with pump and all and it leaked as soon as I put oil in it. I found that they sheared the carrier o-ring when they assembled it!!! A $3,00 part!!! I got no help from mercury and lost my labor day on the water!!!!
