did you turn the throttle all the way to slow. if not there is a lock out, to keep you from shifting. also sounds like the carbs need cleaning, if it's stalling in forward.

it does not need carb cleaning this motor runs at idle for hours when crabbing maybe like 7 hours a day it only stalls when i dont let it warm enough this problem also when i had to shut motor off quick without putting in neautral first then i cant get it to neautral to start what could be out of adjustment? i dont think shifter rod because i have never messed with that

Someone is trying to help you, by asking the question about the throttle. You didn't answer that question. Did you twist the throttle all the way to idle before trying to shift? There is an interlock that prevents shifting if the throttle is advanced.

Everyone here is a volunteer. Sometimes we need more information before we can help. On your end, if someone asks a question and you don't answer, then that person will be less likely to help.

There are about four reasons that your outboard won't shift. We're trying to help you figure out which reason is the most likely.

If you'll answer the question, we'll know more. Since we can't see or touch your engine, we have to rely on you for the information.
