Oh thanks for the info! I didn't know the idle was that high. Perhaps the running problems are just my imagination then. Although, it did die out on plane several times.

If died out at plane several times, try a new hose or barrow a used one that's working ok on any engine, if doesn't miss or dies that's the cause. How are carb diaphragams condition, cracked, deformed, balloned ? if ok, remove carb, re torque all inlet manifold bolts tight with wrench, manifold could be sucking unwanted air. Re torque head gasket too.

Thanks for the tips. Carb diaphragms are fine. No cracks or anything like that.

Ummmm Sheepish question here: If one forgot to vent the fuel tank prior to operation, would it die out at high rpm i.e. on plane?

Don't tell me you posted thread before opening tank vent ? engine should die of fuel starvation and tank should be sucked towards bottom.

I may have done that. We were camping and I didn't post up til after we got back. We still had the other rpm surge at start up issue which occurred with the tank properly vented. It was just the one time with me that I think I didn't vent the tank and then it died out on me. It never occurred to me that they were related until I started reading the service manual. Feel like an idiot now. For what it's worth, I've always had the tank vented while working on it at home.
