i have a 85 evinrude 15 hp. run well exept it starts ok but seems to require a little chock to keep idling intil it good and warm and about 50% of the time it dies when you put it in gear and give it gas. chocking seems to help. whats up? ....Howard.:

It's tune-up time. First, check the compression, if both cylinders are close to the same that's good. I'd say you need to clean and re-build the carb, and change the plugs. I've got a '88 Johnson 15 hp and the plug gap on my motor is .40 but I'm not sure if it's the same for yours or not. Fresh fuel always helps, and check the fuel pump screen for debris. That's a sweet motor you have and well worth a little maintenance.

Yea, I wouldn't go through the time and expense of a carb rebuild, until you at least check the compression and low speed setting on the carb first. You might also check the spark plugs. I heard others say that they gap them out to .040 for better trolling ability.
