I have a 9.9 evinrude that had a 15 hp carb installed when it was new. The motor has sat for 6 years and now I am trying to get it going. I have no problems idling but the high end has nothing and I need to rebuild the carb. My question is, I have the original unused 9.9 carb. Can I put that on and run it until I can rebuild the other one without changing anything? I don't have a manual yet or I probably would not be posting on here. The only difference in the two of them that I can see that may cause a problem is that the 15 hp carb has a small fuel line port I think for the primer that the 9.9 doesn't. Need info please.

My best guess is that you should have no problems using the carb. that came with it originally. What is your specific year? If rebuilding the carb. is what's needed that can be accomplished very quickly so why bother changing them out? Best of luck. Rick.

It depends on the model year.Pre '79 you should be fine.Later versions of the 9.9 had additional changes made to the exhaust system and also a different angle for carburetor.Although the engine will run(at a lower rpm) it may not be performing as good as a 9.9 should.

I had great success, The only problem was that the 15 horse carb has a primer port and line that comes from the fuel primer seloniod, but it only charges when you push the key in, so I plugged it good and fired the engine up and put it in gear for a test in a drum fulll of water. Everything seemed good and 20 minutes later I was on the lake at full throttle. All is well, I can use this carb and rebuild the other for a backup. Thanks for the input I will have many more questions I am sure as I am new to outboard motors, they are a different beast for sure !!LOL

Glad it worked out as I thought. Just for interest sake, do you notice much difference in power between the two carbs.? I would like to know your opinion. Thanks, Rick.
