Hi Guys-

I am new here and I am looking for some help. First off, this has been a great place to find almost everything anyone would need and I appreciate everyone who has posted something here!! Seriously helps those of us who are just trying to figure it all out!!

I need to remove my motor from my boat. I am starting to replace the decking and transom. I have never done this before and I am feeling stuck. Hopefully someone can send me in the right direction. I really don't know where to start and what I should or should do first!

Here are some pictures and maybe you guys have some thoughts.

Thanks for all the help!!

it would be handy to get a lift bracket, its a ring goes on top to lift it by

What you need is an OEM factory service manual. If I was there I could tell or show you in 15 minutes what to do. Sorry, I can't type that long. I'm sure somebody else will come along.

Nice looking motor. Careful though they are very heavy.
The lifting ring screws on where that big nut goes on the top of the motor
If you plan to do work on the motor then i would take off the lower unit and flywheel before lifting. Dropping off the lower unit makes it a lot lighter

It's pretty simple. You can rent a 3-legged automotive wheel (harmonic balancer) puller from a local auto parts shop. It will screw right into the 3 tapped holes on the top of the flywheel. Run a chain down through the puller and lift it off. [I have a hydraulic engine lifter/jack for my uses. You can rent one of those too. Or you can run the chain over a rafter in the garage. Crank the front dolly jack all the way down on the front of the trailer. Sling the chain tight over the rafter. Now crank the trailer dolly jack all the way up. This will take an slack out of the chain and lift the engine just enough to get the bolts out of the transom. Depending on how strong your garage rafters are, you may need to put a temporary 2 X 4 (ceiling to floor) leg to the side of the boat to carry some of the load of the engine. Either way will work just fine.

Re: 140HP V4 Evinrude Help

Thanks guys. I appreciate the info. I should have been more clear as I was wondering the order to disconnect things such as throttle/shifts, VRO, electrical and other things. Didn't want to just start tearing things out if I didn't need to, or what I should do first. I have an engine lift to get it off, and a stand to put it on.

Lastly, should I hook up the steering and throttle after I get it back on the stand incase I need to work on the engine at all? I have see people mount the throttle control onto the stand for this purpose... thoughts??

Evidently I mis-read what you were trying to do, so let's try again: Usually it's a real pain to remove the control box, throttle shift cables and steering cable. All that stuff runs down the starboard gunnel. Usually all the wiring gets ty-wrapped to those cables and to the steering cable. To remove gunnel trim for access, and then take out the control system is a PITA. I'd leave them. If you are redoing the transom, likely you will have to pull the oil tank anyway-it's probably in the way of where you want to work. If you have a fuel tank mounted under the floor-that will work to your advantage-leave it. Looks like an aluminum boat. You will have a lot of critical fasterners that go through the transom-removing them will keep you busy. You may want to consider cutting them and replacing them with new-it may make the plywood removal easier.

AS above i wouldnt pull out the control. You can operate the motor without them.
The motor is actually only in an off position when the control key is turned to off. When you unplug the control plug the motor is actually in the run position so all you have to do to start it is jump between two terminals on the motor, turning it off is actually the harder part.
I normally turn it off, when i have the control removed, by operating the choke manually at the motor.

Re: 140HP V4 Evinrude Help

Heres a video of a Yamaha 40hp i was working on that had being backfiring, one of those two small switches you can see me pick up as i get to motor in bottom of picture is to start it the other is the one i hooked up to work the choke. The only other thing is the two jumper cables from the battery to the motor and thats all thats required.
The black (neg) i grounded by the starter and the red(+ve) should go on to the solenoid where the battery +ve use to go. I should of left them on in that video as its not good to remove them as it can stuff up the charging system.
