New to Merc. Mine is a 1973 140 with a Mercruiser outdrive. She sat for many years but after a total fuel system overhaul she runs fine...but would overheat if I kept her running for long.

I bought a new water pump - the impeller was toast.

While I'm waiting for my shop manual, I thought I'd put the new pump on.

So with everything together, before I put the foot back on the outdrive I find there are things I should have kept track of.

1) My Volvo doesn't care which way the impeller goes in - is this the same for the Mercruiser?

2) I've messed with the splined shifter stub on the foot and don't know what gear it's in, but do know it should go in a certain way. What is the recommended way to make sure the spline goes in properly?

Is there anything else that might require special consideration?

Yes, they should flip the vanes over to the right direction. Just turn the vertical shaft clockwise when installing the housing and it shouldn't be a problem.
