I have a 1980 140 Evinrude that I bought used. The guy I bought it from told me to use a 24:1 oil mix, which I've been doing for about a year. I see from other postings that a 50:1 mix seems to be the norm for that age motor. Is this correct? Would the 24:1 mix have caused any problems for the motor? Here's why I ask:
The motor has always idled rough. RPMs at idle fluctuate between 900 and 1200..the higher the RPMs the smoother the idle. You can watch and hear the RPM speeding up and slowing down, even though no adjustment is being made. It sometimes stalls on idle.
Today, the engine died on me. When I went to give it throttle, I couldn't get it over 2500 rpms or so. Then it stalled out and I couldn't get it started again. It would fire and then stall immediately. (Starved for fuel?) I pulled out the fuel filter and blew it out (it didn't look dirty), and the engine fired up, but still doesn't idle well.
I'm thinking fuel pump, but I'm far from an expert, and I know nothing about carbs. Could the oil mix have anything to do with it? Any ideas?
Thanks.
