Re: 140 alpha 1

Many people (wrongly) refer to the early drives as Alpha Ones. Probably the case here. The squared off (no lifting eye) MR drive (later renamed Alpha One) came along in 1983. Of course there's a possibity that it's been re-powered, so without photos or even better, a serial number...who knows?

An Alpha one gen 1 leg can be mounted on an older gimball assembly.. I'd have to guess that is what happened if it is marked Alpha One

That is an 'R', 'MR', or Alpha One drive (1983-1991)... And they can be used as a replacement for an MC-1 drive if it fails or is 'lost'... The 3 litre/140hp engine started with the MC-1 drive in 1969....

Yeah, that's an newer drive. As Matt stated, they may have been using that drive with the old style transom plate/ bellhousing, or they may have swapped everything over to the newer stuff, but I do not know why someone would bother swapping everything unless there was a major issue. If the bellhousing has rounded ears around the drive mounting studs, then you know it still has the pre-alpha transom stuff.
