Aint seen a perfect day yet....In South Slorida. Most boats can take more punishment than I could.....at 16!

The best advice I ever recieved.....learn the weather. Study what the experts predict, compare what is reality. Fronts stall. Fronts strenghten. Learn cloud formations. I hope you find weather as interesting and helpful as I have. I've been right..I've been wrong...I'm still here.

Mother Nature can be your best friend, or your worse challange. Although you can't figg'r Her out, or predict her.......Get to know Her and respect Her. The dang ICW will kick your butt!

Shucks!....Bring her here. Fish offshore from my place... We go 3 miles we are @60'....You?....@600'? On a good day I would take her over to Bimini. ;)

fathers day and vacation 064resized.jpgfathers day and vacation 065resized.jpg102_6448.jpg

Here is a real life experience in a 15 footer. I was out in Barnegat bay near the inlet so I guess I was about a mile from the ramp. It was a beautiful day. I looked at the sky to the south and remarked to my wife that I didn't like it. A few minutes later I decided to pack it up. Well, by the time I hauled anchor and got everything ready it was raining. By the time I got back to the dock it was raining sideways and the birds were walking. Waves were about 2 feet as I recollect. This in a boat with only about 2 feet freeboard. On that ride back, I wasn't worried, but I wasn't comfortable either.

SO: weather can change suddenly and you need to be prepared. Mind you: This was inshore, not offshore.

AND: A little hull is a little hull is a little hull! Yeah, they can take some adverse conditions but were made for calm water.

Re: 14 footer 3miles out

I have a buddy that routinely travels significantly further than 3 miles out the Venice Inlet. In a well worn 14' Mckee skiff. Not recommending those at home rush out & do the same. Just saying that if you are prepared and/or know what you're doing, it's not that big a deal.

As has been mentioned it pays to keep abreast of the weather forecast ...

Fwiw you can get into trouble in a 40 footer almost as fast as you can in a 14 footer?

Just thought I'd check in to see if the OP was still alive after his Sunday excursion.

Nothing yet...

Re: 14 footer 3miles out

A little late to the party here. I'm a multi-decade 13' classic Whaler driver. I'll do all sorts of 'stupid' things in south Florida I wouldn't do at home.

Oh, and what if the engine dies out there? What then?

How do you pull start the engine, retrieve an anchor and a few hundred feet of rode by hand, or paddle a 40' boat?

If the battery were the problem I'd pull start it. If the battery were fine I'd call for a tow on the fixed mount VHF. It would be pretty dumb to go out of sight of the radio towers in a 14' boat, and most people have cell phones now. If that didn't work I'd hope someone was close enough to hear me ask for help on my handheld VHF. If that didn't work I'd look at which way I was drifting and either throw out the anchor or start paddling. These days I'll also bring a PLB along when going that far offshore in any boat...

I have had no real problem going from the Pennekamp state park ramp out snorkeling to places like Molasses reef (9.2mi out, 6mi offshore) or from a rental house on the Gulf side of Vaca Cut out snorkeling to places like Sombrero Light Reef (12mi out, 8mi offshore)) several times each in the 13' Whaler. Yeah the weather could have (and did sometimes) turn worse, and we got a bit wet. I trust the boat to be a lot more durable than the passengers in it, so I've done a bunch of things south of Cape Canaveral that I wouldn't consider north of Cape Cod. Getting wet with 80 degree water on a 90 degree day won't kill my family, 50 degree water on a 60 degree day has the potential...

IMHO, I think the best thing you could do is to spend the $100-$150 and get a waterproof DSC capable handheld VHF and keep it on you. Set it up and learn how to use it! If your motor quits 3 miles out and your cell phone don't work.... you know the rest!

I would not do this in that boat in that location. West coast, yeah on a good day in the morning, and returning by 1pm. Over there? No way.

I live in Florida, by the way.
