I have a '96 Johnson 130 that starts relatively easy, idles a bit rough but idles, run pretty good at WOT. It has very good power but dies if you hit it from idle. If you pump the throttle to get past the bogging then open it it really takes off.
I've been told that it could be the small fuel passages in the carbs. Can anyone tell me if I can clean these with the carbs on (by pulling the bowl covers). Do I need to pull the carbs and totally overhaul them? Never done outboard carbs before but think I could handle it. Also bought some OMC in the tank stabilizer/cleaner and OMC nozzle injected cleaner. Any opinions on these would also be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

You COULD try to remove the bowls and clean the pickup tube with a pipecleaner, but....
It would be best to pull them, remove the jets and the tube (if it cooperates), and clean them completely.
That way you can check float settings at the same time (which could be what's causing that to begin with.
It's not hard, just time consuming.

I would start with cleaning the carbs. Remove the carbs and throttle bodys and soak after disassembly. There are two small tbues going into the bowl. One for the idle and one for the midrange passages. Be careful not to move them but make sure they are clear. Use factory kits to reassemble.

Be sure to use FRESH 87 octane fuel and Champion plugs. Your WOT RPM should be 5800 with an average load.

Let us know how you make out.

Good luck.

Im troubleshooting a simular problem. Last night I found a damaged fuel line going into the bottom of a carb. The rod which controls the butterflys had ripped off the tie wrap and frayed the line - it was leaking fuel at the nipple, and maybe causing my problem. Check everything, the easy things first. Looking forward to my test run. - mikec

I have a 97 Johnson 130 with exactly the same symptoms. At sea level it idles better and accelerates hard from idle without stalling.I usually run in a lake which is at 1300'and the throttle must be advanced to 1000 rpm before I can punch it without stalling.I tried cleaning the tubes to the carb bowls but havent run the engine to see if this helped. It was very simple to do and Ill let you know if it helped after I take the boat out in a few days. Also,a pipe cleaner will not fit through the idle air bypass tube. Were looking for the same solution ,hopefully we can help each other.
