I was wanting to put a 25hp on my 12ft boat.... I know I would need to rebuild the transom higher and add more weight up front..... I have seen it done before.... Anybody have any ideas on rebuilding the transon to be stronger?

A really, really, REALLY bad idea, Lersia. Yes, it has been done before. The results of too many similar adventures are why I say it is such a bad idea. Horsepower ratings on boats are there to keep people alive.

Get a bigger boat or a smaller engine. Live long enough to talk someone else out of trying something similar.

Good luck.

JB

HP ratings for very small boats are usually based on tiller steering. You dont say what kind of boat you have. With remote steering, you can go higher than whats on the CG plate, within limits. But you have to live with very low transom freeboard from the extra weight at stern. When I was young, I was flipped out of a 12ft bateau (jon boat) with a 15 hp tiller motor by making a sudden turn, its not hard. Its standard practice here in south louisiana to run 35-40hp on 14'-36" bottom bateaus with remote steering, CG plate usually says 20 or so. I had one until recently, with a 35, and it was properly powered, ran about 35 mph, and was very stable. If you plan to add a steering wheel or stick steering at bow, you could probably do it OK. Definitely not if a tiller motor.

Lersia,
What lake are you planning to operate this boat on?

I don't want to be there when they pull your bloated lifeless body out of it.

Kinda crude but it gets right to the point.

Capt Ron

Its one you steer with the handle thingy attached to the motor, or, maybe one you can take off and plow your garden with!

I put a 25 tiller model on my 14 jon (36" bottom) and took it out ------ one time !!! SCARY !!!

I traded for a 15hp, which is plenty.

there is a caveat in all of this, suppose someone HAS a 18 horse Nissan motor and a 12 foot boat gets dropped in his lap? bolt it on and use part throttle, hell, a Viper goes 200 MPH, but they do fine at 65 too

Just a matter of the transom being overloaded, clearly, a forty horse on a ten footer spells El Sinko the moment any sort of wave (or movement!) happens, but within reason and with good judgement, there is no problem with having a boat motor capable of overpowering your boat, as long as you DONT OVERDO IT!!!

I pulled a guy out a couple of years ago that took off from the boat launch in a 10' Livingston with a 20hp. There was no wind and the water was perfectly flat but he only made it about 100 yards when he hit the Ferry's wake and got about 5 foot of air under him. The boat looked like a leaf in the wind as it came down. Other than a 6 inch long gash in his arm he was fine and I towed in the capsized boat but he lost every thing in the boat except the engine. I'd say he was lucky. What if no one was around?

I saw a fellow put on a 25 johnson on a narrow 14 ft lund rated to at most 15hp. He was by himself in the boat and on acceration lifted the bow of the boat 3ft in the air. Aboat 1hr later I saw the same guy trying to pull a single tube with a small child on it without a spotter in the boat. Not only was it illegal and subject to fines in our waters but dangerous. Within one minute of attempting to pull the tube the guy flipped the whole boat. Lucky for him I was able to pick up him and the child as well as tow his capsized boat to the shore.

Castaway,

The only problem with that, sir, is those motors are supposed to be run in at least the top third of its max wot rpms.

Holy smokes, I couldn't imagine more than a 9.9 on the 14' jon I had. Shoot, the 36# Minn Kota made the transom flex...

Alumacraft Jon's

the 16 is rated for 40 HP, the 14-25 HP and 12-15 HP

Quality has a lot to do witht the rating. Cheap boats low HP rating.

I think my Nichols 14 was rated for six horses ... wasnt much to the boat, the Starcraft 18 DWARFS the little guy (which is still being used by my buddy Paul, every year he clamps a troller on it and drags it all over hellnback!) but I used a 12 horse motor on it for years and never had a problem, when it pounded too hard, I slowed down ... like I said, grossly overpowering is BAD, but mild overkill wont kill ya, if you have a shred of common sense!

12' sea nymph and 20hp merc. at wot it would lift aft 2-3' of bottom out of the water and ride on bow and cavitation plate. ok going straight but turns were an invitation to disaster. put a 10hp honda on it. much, much safer.
