Either is good. The Seloc manuals are perhaps a little quirkier and personal than the Clymers, which tend to be a little drier and technical. So you can get either based on your own preferences. I like the Seloc because it will say things like, "you don't really need to disassemble this part of the carb during normal service..."

I used to live in Louisville, hung out at Taylorsville lake a lot. Even went on the Ohio a couple of times! Where do you take your boat?

How is the Solec as far as wiring diagrams? Like I said, I am pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff. I do know to at least connect the battery first though.

Because of the problems I have listed, I haven't really been able to take my boat out as much as I would like. I have been out on the Ohio several times and went to Nolin Lake, near Litchfield, two weekends ago. That's when I noticed the problem we are still discussing today. I love Lake Cumberland and hope to get down there before the season is over. Do you think I could find a store where I could browse through one of these manuals before buying one? Do you ever get back in this area?

Like page62 said... your preference... all Manuals i have seen have been shrink wrapped... & if you open it, you bought it...

Check your local library on-line & see if they have one... in Nashville & Franklin our have limited selection... I have Clymer of small lawnmower engines right now & if I recall it is "overdue"!!!!!!!!!

On my way to library!!!!!!!!!!!

fone_man

How far are you away from KY? Do you ever head to Dale Hollow, Cumberland, Kentucky, or Barkley Lake? They all are VERY nice.

Kyle,

I feel your pain. I just bought a 1970 Chrysler with a Volvo engine. I purchased the Solec manual and It gives a broad overview of everything from rebuilding carbs to replacing impellers. There's one problem though. Volvo has come out with a new engine just about every year between 1968 and 1991. Unfortunately, this manual doesn't fully cover the AQ series. I have an AQ 120 and have found this manual to be nothing more than a shove in the right direction. The illustrations may not have the exact part from my particular engine, but they do give me an idea of what direction to go in when attempting repairs on my own.

Good Luck

Raised in W TN... grew up on Paris Landing/Kentucky Lake... Yes I have been to Barkley... Part of KY lake... Been to Turkey Bay many of time just a "muddin" & off-roading!!!!

Dale Hollow I haven't been to yet but go to Center Hill quite frequently... But my favorite is TN River... Birdie, Yellow Lab, & I luv to just set it @ 25-28 MPH & will cruise for hours... to give you an idea grab a map & look for I-40 & when it crosses TN River (Cuba Landing) put in early in the AM & cruise up past Hwy 79 to Cypress Bay & back... cost about a tank & half but really enjoy cruising "down the river"...

Try it sometime!!!

Franklin is 65 mile from KY up I-65 or I-24 & is right outside of Nashville...

Louisville... great little town... KFC & Ashland Oil were my major accounts in that area years ago!!!!!!!! Stay @ Holiday Inn next to KFC & used to go down to old part of town & hang out at the Brewery... good beer, good food, & enjoyed watching them play volleyball all night!!!

Charger 151

Hooray! I am finally an established member!

In all seriousness, how well does the manual cover the AQ125A? I really need something that can take me through fairly well. If you think it would help, I would like ot get one. However I don't want to spend $30 on somehting I can't really understand. I just wish I could find someplace to look at it before I bought one.

fone_man

How many times must you lock through on your trip up the TN River? I too love to take my dogs out on the Ohio with me. I have two coonhounds that are just over a year old. Louisville is nice. I grew up in Frankfort and went to school at UofL. I just graduated in May and am employed just across the river in IN. I have never been to the brewery, but I have heard it was a fun place to go. I know the exact Holiday Inn you are talking about. I used to go to KFC HQ and get payed to taste test new sandwiches they were bringing out. That was always a nice dinner because you got filled up and they gave you money.

None........

Can coon dawgs swim???????????? Walkers or Blue Ticks????

KFC is more than chicken!!!!!!!!!

Get a map... a good one which I use for all the lakes I travel to is made by:

Atlantic Mapping
PO Box 7391
Marietta, GA 30065
770.426.5768

Call them for a list of available maps... TN River / Kentucky Lake / Lake Barkley requires two maps to cover the area... best advice I can give... markings identify all bouys, underwater structures, etc.. You don't
take to the highway on vacation without one so going to unknown river/lake or body of water is no different!!! Best advice I can give plus you will be familiar with sites, etc. to make your trip that much more enjoyable....

Have you gone on-line to check your library in New Albany, IN or Louisville for manuals yet....

I hope you get that "Volvo" running right & enjoy your boating experiences... Have fun &........

------------------
"Keep It Between The Bouys" & "Good Luck"!!!

fone_man

Yes, I get back to Louisville a few times a year. I work as a consultant to Colonel Sanders & Co.

But that Holiday Inn...yuck! The doors are made of wood and all night long all you hear are slamming doors. And every door jamb is cracked from being kicked in at some point or another. Fortunately they built a Candlewood Suites on the other side of KFC HQ.

Anyhow, maybe you should go for the Chilton. They tend to be a little more comprehensive in terms of wiring diagrams, etc.

By the way, the best place around Louisville in the summer is Captain's Quarters out River Road. You get to do all kinds of people watchin' and you also get to see all manner of boats (and yachts) coming and going!

fone_man

You are a genius. I did find the manuals on-line at the Louisville public library. I am headed over there at lunch to pick them up. Of course coon dogs can swim. They have webbed feet, like ducks, to help them go faster. Mine have never swam though, although they have almost jumped off my boat into the Ohio. They have gotten in at the ramp, but kept their feet on the bottom. Thanks again for all the help. If oyu want some information on coonhounds see this link. They even address your question. Mine are Lady and Bailey (not shown). Lady is a red bone and Bailey is a black and tan.

Coons

page62

So I guess you get your chare of chicken. They now charge to launch your boat over at CQ. I always drop at Cox park. I am going to check out the Clymer and Seloc books I can check out and then may check out the Chilton you speak of. Hopefully I can spend a little time this evening and figure out why my blower isn't working. Can I get a carb rebuild kit at a car repair shop? Thank you also for your help.

John

I bought the B12 spray last night and am planning to hose down the carb tonight. Did your friend fix his acc. pump by just spraying the carb or the pump? Also, with the Marvel mystery oil, do you just put it in the gas and it helps?

I'm surprised at all you guys, you need to get back to the basics!! First of all check the timing at idle on these OCS (overhead camshaft) engines. Changed alot of timing belts on these engines, that's right timing belt!!! Actually you should check the compression first but it's just something I've seen on these engines, the belt jumps a tooth or two on the sprockets, still runs but the valve timing is out of wack, hence stalls and hesitationor little to no power..Joseph

Re: 125 HP Volvo Penta I/O stalls/hesitates when accelerating

Cleaned out the Carb with B12 spray and it is warming up better. It doesn't seem to sputter as much when I accelerate, but I think it can still do a lot better. It has been recommended that I change the points and condenser. Do you think that will help? I also found the prop I am using is a 14X19 and I am running it on a 19' boat. How do you think a 14X17 would perform and how would it affect my top speed? I can currently get about 30 MPH on smooth water at around 4400 RPM. Max RPMs are 4800 for this engine. Thanks

Re: 125 HP Volvo Penta I/O stalls/hesitates when accelerating

Kyle:

Changing to 17 pitch will give better hole shots and a couple hundred RPM higher... which will put you closer to Max RPM range of engine...

I run a SS 19 pitch on my boat but I do have an extra 17 & 19 Alum should I need a spare... I use the SS 19 exclusively but I am more a crusier than skier anymore... my bones cannot take it like when I was younger... either way you always need an extra prop for spare... that way when one is in for repair or you have damage... weekend is not spoiled.

Glad to here everything is progressing smoothly & I hope the dawgs are having fun!!!

I would name my boat.... "Coon Dawg"... c-ya

 & :D

Re: 125 HP Volvo Penta I/O stalls/hesitates when accelerating

I recently bought a 82' 21ft bayliner with the 4cyl volvo penta Q125 engine. I have cleaned all the gunk out of the carb but I am still having problems getting it to start(takes a shot of ether) I have researched into a replacement/upgrade and found a replacement kit that converts to a 2bbl weber from BFIC for $619. I am looking for a cheaper way to remedy my problem. I know I have low compression on cylinder 4(20 psi low) I have the manual that covers volvo engines and sterndrives and it does help a little but it does not help much with the 125 model. Anyone out there that has this model could you tell me what you have done and what works the best, I would appreciate it

Fone_Man,
When you do that TN river trip. Is there a lot of debris in the river? If it's that cool I'd love to check it out some time. We usually go to Tim's Ford, both it and Center Hill are about the same distance from the Boro, but Tim's has fewer hills along the way. We like the Blue Gill Grill at Tim's too. Of course Center Hill is always a good trip. The wife, kids and I rescued an American Fox Hound there last summer.
