I recently porchased and have started restoring a 12' Penn Yan cartopper and have a few questions I am hoping someone out there has experience with. I have attached some pictures to hopefully show what i am describing.
Question #1 - To start with I have a question about the wooden ribs on the boat. The one I have has only the ribs that run the entire width of the boat from one side to the other. Other boats I have seen as shown in the picture I have attached shows an additional set of shorter ribs that are placed between each of the longer ribs. Was this a later add on for additional support or was it original to the boat and perhaps offered as an option or upgrade?
Question #2 - What kind of wood are the ribs commonly made of?
Question #3 - The outside of the boat is (was) covered in canvas and then painted. I am considering the idea of fiberglassing the outside with cloth and epoxy before I re-install the canvas to give the little boat some strength. These are very light boats (56 lbs.) and hence are somewhat flimsy feeling. I actually worry about stepping of into one of them as light as they are made. Of coarse, I know I will add some weight to it if I fiberglass the exterior but would like to know the opinions of some of you before I decide. What do you think?
