"maoried some thing up", that's a new one. Are you in NZ, or there abouts? What type of steering system are you using (rotary, cable and pulley, stick steering, etc...?), and what year is the motor? It sounds like you may need a cable clamp like these: http://www.thefind.com/sports/browse-teleflex-clamp-block , which are used to hold the steering cable, but it's hard to tell from your description. A pic might help too. Bob_VT is right, you should check out the iboats store to see what you need. Even if you choose not to get it from here, it's a great resource for looking up bits and pieces and seeing how everything goes together.

I'm too late now but remote steering seems a little much on a 8hp 12 footer.I know you probably want to get more weight forward.
Did you consider a tiller extension? Or is your system a stick steer. Stick steer saves space and doesn't require a console.
We had a 12ft flat bottom steel boat with a 5 with a tiller extension. It popped on plane and ran 10 or 12 mph with a 180 pounder
in the middle seat.

I agree. I'm not sure they even designed motors that small to take controls, although you could certainly cobble something together. I agree that a tiller extension might do the trick and only cost about $5. It certainly helps in my 14' tinny. It allows me to move forward 6"-12", which doesn't sound like much, but makes a huge difference in getting on plane, etc... Here's one I made for my '66 20hp. It's made from thin-walled 1-1/4" PVC, and end cap (optional) and a couple of pipe clamps. The trick is to cut a 4-5, 12"-18" slits in one end. Be sure to drill a small hole at the end of each slit to prevent further splitting. You can even use a heat gun to soften the PVC a bit to get an even more molded form, but I wasn't necessary on mine.
