Hello,

Just removed my rotted out transom, took a couple hours because of some seriously rusted original screws. Anyways I am now on the search for a plywood to replace the transom. Marine plywood sells for about 150 dollars where I live (4x8), is there any other option? I understand P/T ply is out of the question but there has to be something else. Any ideas? Can I buy an outdoor ply and coat it in something?

One more question, what type of screws, nuts and bolts should I use?

I have read multiple different answers all over the internet and I am still confused. Just want a quality finish that will last years. How ever if Marine plywood is a scam and there are other comparable products.....ide rather save a few bucks lol.

I appreciate any answers and I'm sure there are other people out there who will as well.

Regards, Anthony

Exterior plywood will be fine. Many of us have used Arauco exterior ply from Lowes and/or Home Depot and/or Menards and found it to be a very nice product. You'll want to use all stainless fasteners. As for sealing it, there are many options depending on how long you want it to last. Best would be fiberglass (poly or epoxy resin), next would be epoxy resin alone (epoxy can be used without glass, poly can't) but you must then paint the epoxy as it is not UV protected. Next would be marine spar varnish. Next would be porch & floor paint or something like that.

No problem. I'm going to be doing the same project here very shortly on my dad's 14 footer. Definitely time to do it as it currently leaks like a sieve through the fasteners

Aruaco works great. I epoxy over that and then spar varnish for wood finish or paint. Our Sea Nymph will be ,epoxy, prime, Rustoleum oil based paint. The Lowes by my house has a very robust choice of SS fasteners. Regular bolts will rust.

Where's Keswick by the way?

I have not gone to the local lowes yet but online they only show interior Aruaco ply. Click link below. IS this what you are talking about?

Plywood | Lowe's Canada

I'm also having trouble finding the correct epoxy resin, everything I am finding is for concrete.

Keswick is located in Southern Ontario Canada

Arauco is exterior (and that's what I'm seeing in your link)

I used Spar varnish and it worked works great.

Easy to get and less expensive then epoxy. Will last for many many years.
