Hey all,

I just got a Carter Craft 12' Skiff with a '67 Evinrude 9.5hp Sportwin. The motor fires on the first pull every time, and appears to be running perfect. The issue I have is this: the boat won't plane! It seems like it is too stern heavy with me in the back (190lbs), but besides the 3lb gas tank, there isn't any weight there to shift!

I've been told it has a speed prop on it, but it's so worn I couldn't tell you the pitch or anything about it. When I sit up front the boat planes fine but when I move back it comes back off the plane. The anti-cav plate is 1" below the keel. I bought a hydrofoil for it but haven't installed it yet. Not sure if it would make a difference. Any advice would be great! I've seen the suggestion of attaching a pvc pipe on the tiller and sitting up front, but I'd like to see if I can find another option seeing as how I have no trolling motor, battery or any other misc weight to carry. Just me! Thanks.

Re: 12' 1968 Carter Craft Planing Problems

Had same problem on a particular boat at our remote fish camp. Found that if I leaned forward as best I could would get up on plane and then from there could lean back into normal position.

Good luck.

Welcome to iboats.

Your problem may be that you simply have the wrong prop for the boat. I would start a thread on the prop site and see what you get back.

Re: 12' 1968 Carter Craft Planing Problems

If it is any help, I am having the same problem with my 12' duck boat and my 72 sportwin 9.5. I did install the hydrofoils on it and noticed it was planing a little easier. it planed better when i leaned as far forward as i could. The problem with the foils is that they will catch EVERY single weed.. so there is a trade off but if you are in mostly deep water, id put them in!!
