115hp starter issues

I have twin 115hp 1994 2stroke 4 cylinder mariners. One starts great no prob. The other is more laboured on ignition and sometimes the starter motor struggles to turn. The batteries on both engines are good reading about 12.85 V and if swopped over the prob remains. I have cleaned terminals. Will move onto the starter solenoid and then the starter motor next. Anyone got any good tips?

Sounds like you need to either replace the brushes on the labored started or replace the starter..

Try tapping it with a hammer and soak it with some WD-40, might be some corrosion. Yeah, I know, sounds simplistic but it's worked for me in the past:)

I dont think i would tap anything with a hammer, It may work a couple of times but in the long run it is a band aid.

Prior to rebuilding my starter it was sluggish and would crank slow and heat up. I tore it all apart and replaced the brushes and cleaned it up and only added 3 to 1 oil where it called for it. It cranks fast as new now and works great.

Thanks for pointers guys! Stripped down the starter,
replaced the worn brushes and gave it a clean up
and it now works great! Thanks for your help!
