115hp motor.jpgCrestliner.jpgI'm looking at this boat motor and trailer, to possibly purchase. I don't know the year on the boat or motor yet. The owner says that one of the cylinders has low cranking compression. What could cause this? Is it fixable? Was it common with these motors? Price for the 17' Crestliner boat, 115hp motor, trailer, downrigggers, and 6hp kicker seems pretty reasonable. Should I run?!?!?!?! Or look into it further? What do you think it's worth? Thanks!

You need to figure out worst case if you have to pay someone for a total rebuild, then look for a similar boat that is up and running, is it then worth it?

You should test the cranking compression prior to purchase. Should probably be around 100 lbs on each cyl. A 10% variance between all cyls is acceptable. If one is less than 90 lbs it could be a problem. Might only be a head gasket, but could need a complete overhaul. Pull all 4 plugs out when testing the compression.

The low cranking compression could be as simple as a blown head gasket. But, be carefull !!!
