1150 Year ID

Greets All,
Can someone help me ID this motor. The serial at the front outside of motor is 2885004 which is a 1970 according to my repair manual. However, inside the cowel the timing sticker says 23 degrees, the motor is all black, and it currently has L78V plugs in it.
Are there serials stamped into the block somewhere I can check, I didn't see any.

Serial # should be stamped on the right rear of the block. 1970 is the correct year for that #

Sounds like a Merc dealer upgraded the timing sticker (21 degrees IS correct)
And perhaps the block was painted black OR replaced with a factory block made after 1972. The plugs outta be L76V

The motor is a Blue Band. It has Thunderbolt ignition. Isn't a 1970 a red band?

More specifically where do I look for the block serial number? I was not able to find any serial. powerhead replaced maybe?

The motor is on an 17 foot 1989 Spectrum, aluminum open bow fish/ski style boat and runs 45mph by speedo with two people in the boat. it idles a little rough, seems to have a slight miss occasionally at idle, and has a fair amount of leaked fuel around the carbs.I'm getting ready to rebuild carbs, fuel pump, plug wires, plugs, water pump, and starter soleniod and want to make sure I buy the right parts. The 23 degree thing confuses me, is it really a 115 or another motor swapped in?

off the subject by i have a 89 spectrum, center console, with a 1988 johnson 88 spl, runs out a 45 mph.. and i thought mine was over powered. they came as a package with 50hp forces & mercs on them.

The band of the 1970 was red, but that is easy to change. If the block is silver it is a 1972 or older and the serial number is on the flange by the starter. If the motor has a black (1973 or newer) block the serial number is where the two halves of the block bolt together. Hope that helps. BTW if a 88 hp Johnnyrude pushes this same hull at 45 MPH your 115 should be much faster if it runs properly. JR

Hey Eric, I think the actual loss of power in the gear box is 8-9% but the big boys here would have to weigh in with the exact loss figure.

After 1982 my 1981 115 would have been called a 90 and a 140 HP inline would have been a 115, (so yer right about the hp #s, but that is just a number: Eric, they don't actually loose the whole 25 hp).

That said, you also know as a Merc owner that Mercury was very cornservative in rating the power from these engines. Either of my crank rated 115(s) (a 1979 or a 1981 [which the 115 hp rating was already cornservative or understated]) would eat any 1988 stock Johnyrude 88 hp at the prop on a comparable boat for a snack, breakfast, lunch or dinner. That is out of the hole to WOT.

My old 1969 Merc 1000s are real killers too. I bet they would give that 88 hp a run fer it's money, but I'm not as confident of smokin' it as I would be with a crank rated 115 that runs as sweet as me motors do!!

I bet you have had similar experiences, (if yer an over grown kid as I am). That is one of the many reasons I luv these old girls: Eric!! I eat most comparable HP motors any brands including newer Mercs up real easy, don't you??? Respectfully, JR
