I believe my motor is in need of new plug wires, the existing wires are cracked and appear to be very old. I'd like to change them out before the weekend and not have to mail order the wires. Can I purchase a universal automotive plug wire set and use on this motor? It is a 1970 1150. Thanks in advance.

You need solid coper wires and the ends screw into the distributer cap. Last time I did it, (a number of years ago), Packard 440 wires were still available, (not sure if they still make 'em) and I built the wires with new screw in ends purchased from my Merc mechanic's shop. Good luck. JR

That was kind of important! Thanks for the info, you save just saved me $80! I'll just have to live without them for another week.

Zracer, They are availible on the web. I found some for $6 each, with the screw ends installed. Try www.Vintageoutboards.com You need the 36" ones for that distributor model of yours. You are supposed to cut and install the boots to customize them. I left them all long and resued the boots and springs.
