115 HP Mercury Outboard - Trouble determining year / finding serial number

I have been trying to determine the year of my motor so I can order some parts... I'd say it's 86-94 by the decals but obviously I cannot confirm that. Look for the serial number you say? I thought that I found it (more than once), but it doesn't seem to be the number people are expecting. First number written on a nice Metal backed Mercury Tag says serial number "OB227445" - which doesn't seem to be the right number. Found another set of numbers stamped on a metal plate (secures wires going to outboard) which I looked up and supposedly (vaguely) confirmed that I have a 1970'something motor... Unfortunately that's just not believable.

Can anyone tell me exactly where to look / what to look for?

Welcome aboard, Super. If you look at the stickies on the top of the Merc forum, the FAQ has a link to determining the years of your motor. One of the links is to MaxRules and S/N B227445 points to 1987. I've been wrong before on this, but hopefully a more knowledgeable member will be along.
