I always often check the water coming out of the pee hole on my 110VRO, to make sure the water isn't to hot. I had not run the motor since last year, When I fired the engine up last spring it didn't take long and the water coming out was almost to hot to touch. So I took it to my local marine mechanic and he installed a new water pump, checked eveything and said I was good to go. The other day I hooked up my rabbit ears to the garden hose and fired the motor up as I always do so I have no suprises when I get to the lake, I let it run about 20 minutes, and kept checking the pee hole water, the stream ran from mediumwarm to warm, then I did feel a few second period of very hot, back to warm, I thought o.k. not to much to worry about, but then when I swiched the motor off the stream immieditly quit and steam came out, so I fired the motor back up for a few seconds, let the stream come back, and shut it off, again hot steam, I repeated firing up the motor and shutting it off a few more times and then the stream slowed down and came to a drip out of the pee hole as normal. My question is what do you think the problem is, or do I even have a problem? It just dosn't seem normal to me and I don't want to take any chances. Could it be the thermostat or what else is in the cooling system other than the water pump and thermostat that I should replace? Also in looking at the 110 VRO thermostat on this site it calls my 110 a crossflow and it looks to have 2 thermostats according to the pic, is this correct? Thanks, DK.

Re: 110 VRO Cooling System Questions.

I would have a look in the thermostat housing. Probably replace the two thermostats, just for good measure. Also, inspect the valve body. There are two small pinholes in it. They occasionally plug up with crud. If either hole plugs up, the thermostats will not open and the engine will oveheat at idle and at slow speeds. Be sure to check the pressure relief valves-they will deform if overheated.

I would point the finger at the thermostat if anything... I have a 140 VRO and the water is ALWAYS what I would call "room temperature" out of the overboard tube... even after WOT runs it's the same temperature, and my heads are always toasty but touchable after running.

Actually you should consider running a temp gun on your heads when the water is hot, see if they are overheating. Test your overheat horn system as well to be safe.
