I have an 87 110 Johnson. When I'm idling along and slowly bring up the rpms the motor acts like it's loading up or missing in the 1000-2200ish rpm range. Once passed that it clears out and runs strong up to 5600.
The mid-jets in the carb bowls could be restricted. The high speed jets are large enough that it still should run ok at WOT- if they are not restricted.
