11' Jon Boat to Bass Boat Conversion

Hi all! I just recently got a 11' Jon Boat from my girlfriend. Structurally it is as sound as can be, visually needs new paint bad.

I've started the sanding process to strip is clear of whatever splotchy paint was on it. As far as painting it it sounds like after I've completely sanded it down I need to use a aluminum oxide primer. After the boat is all primed what is a good cheap finish paint to use on it? I want to go with a standard olive green, like on any other Jon boat. Will I need a clear finish coat? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You'll need the self etching zinc chromate or similar primer for aluminum, not aluminum oxide.

Lots of folks on here use the Rustoleum Professional grade paint, I'm pretty sure they lmake it in the olive drab color. No clear finish needed for olive drab.

I have an OD green jon boat and I buy my spray paint at Walmart...it's called Ultra Flat Camouflage Paint, comes in several shades of OD, Khaki, Desert Tan, etc....just spray it all over the boat, touch up as needed!....Maybe not spend too much time/money/paint on the underside, since it doesn't show much and it'll get warn off when you beach the boat anyway! I wouldn't spend a lot of time sanding, prepping the surface, etc....just spray it and go fishing!

Are you spraying, or rolling? How durable of a finish are you looking for? The last link in my signature should give you some good info.

I would prefer to spray, either rattle can or with a spray gun. Primmer will probably be rattle canned and finish will be sprayed.
