1000/100hp mercury question

im new here and dont know if i should post this here or in the electronic section but i am having trouble figuring out how to wire up the ignition switch. i am using a 6 prong switch origionally it uses a 5 prong switch. i was told the extra wire is just for the choke.is this conversion possable? i have figured out where some of the wires go but not all of them. any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. its a 1000/100 hp with thunderbolt ignition and im not sure of the year thanks

This is the correct place. I will guess that the motor is pre 1980, and give you the old color codes. If that doesn't work, let me know.

Your terminals should be labeled as I,C,S,M,M,B

Black (ground) is connected to one of the M terminals. Slamon or orange (ign killer) goes to the other M terminal. Red (Battery) to the B terminal. Grey (choke) to the C terminal, yellow (starter Solenoid) to the S terminal and white (Ign accessory) to the I terminal.

If it has a orginal 5 prong switch and has a light blue wire in harness, this is the dual points model and uses a totally different wiring diagram...

the colors are yellow red black salmon brown gray and white. i dont have an orange wire but the labels are all the same as stated. would that be the same as brown maybe. and there is not any light blue wires

Salmon and orange wires have the same function. You will have only one of them. Brown is the sender for the Tach.

ok its seems to be right now the motor turns over nicely. the choke works. but i dont have any spark. do you think this is a separate issue

To answer that requestion requires that we know the year of the motor. The early Mercs needed battery foltage (on hte white wire) in order to have spark. Does the motor have a distributor?

i dont kn ow the exact year of the motor is there any way i can find out the year for sure.... and yes it has a distributor

Go to maxrules.com and look on the model guide. A serial number and HP wil pinpoint the year.

the motor is a 1968 i believe
