10 hp no go.......

I have a 10 hp. wil start up but only runs for very short time and stalls.. is there a heat shut off on this engin oh yes its a mid-70's motor. My father inlaw gave it to me I don't no much about them at all. seemed that when it did run it was pumping water

There is no heat shut off. Make sure vent screw on gas tank is open and prime bulb till it gets hard. Choke motor and when it starts slowly turn choke off. When motor dies is the fuel primer bulb hard or soft? How old is the gas you are using?
