Re: 10 best bass lures

As far as brands go, I buy what I find on sale. So this list is a little generic.

1) Spinnerbait/Chatterbait (But mostly spinnerbait)
2) Senko (I like the 4" because it skips nice, my wife seems to catch bigger fish on the 5")
4) Popper (seems to work when the walker doesn't)
3) Walker (Got a 6 lb smallie this year on a Spook Jr)
5) Frog (But it wasnt good to me this year)
6) Beaver (w heavy pegged weight to get into the thick stuff)
7) Crankbait (If I could just keep pike from biting these off)
8) Rubber Worm (Texas rigged, slides through the thick weeds pretty good)
9) Jerk Baits (When nothing else is working these somtimes will)
10) Jigs (I don't fish them as often as I should)

My first two choices are a watermellon colored lizard or worm carolina rigged, second choice is a Storm Wildeye Swim Shad in shad color. Surface lures: either a Rapala or Jitterbug. Happy fishing

Here's my Dad's favorite:

My son's favorite is a watermelon sinko.

My favorite is a top water soft plastic black frog called a culprit.

First real big (5 pound) largeouth my son caught was on a culprit in a small pond near some stables by my dad's house. I told him to cast it onto the weed tops and twitch it in. Just as it got about 4 feet from the bank, I started to tell him he could expect a strike any second when WHAMMO!! The bass smacked that thing like a freight train and scared the pee out of my son. All I could do was laugh as he fought this thing and yelled at me to quit laughing and help him get the thing out of the water and tangle of weeds. It was a beauty and we let it go.

Top 10?

Not a big bass fisherman. However, I sometimes fish smallies on purpose, and catch them incidental to walleye fishing too. So I don't have a top ten, but:

1] Original Rapala, 9P
2] Shadrap 11P
3] Yellow Rooster Tail with a bit of crawler on the treble
4] 1/8oz jighead white tail red body

I use this, which I buy for $1 ea at walmart (they have a cardboard bin of them, no packaging):

and this, (dark green, brown or purple on sunny days, orange and grey on dreary days):
red_gummi_worms.jpg

(and never with hooked tails). I just make a double hook lead on the spot. No need to pay for the pre-hooked ones. The double hook is also important, because it makes them swim a certain way which a single hook can't duplicate.

If neither of those get a bass within 1 hour, they just aren't biting. I normally catch 8-12 an afternoon with just those. I love when I bring new friends to my fishing spots and they see me pull out these nasty lego-colored rubber worms, and they pull out their $7 per lure tackle sets. It is normally about 40 minutes and 3 bass later before they ask "Hey, can I try one of those rubber worms?". My wife will ask how long it took every time I bring someone fishing.

Did I mention I REALLY love bass fishing? :)

1 Mr Hootie spinner bait Char and White 3/8 oz
2 200 series Bandit crankbait in several colors
3 7 1/2 culprit Junebug worm
4 Zoom Fluke in several colors
5 Zoom finesse worm in several colors but spring time Red Bug! Drop shot or Texas
6 Wobblehead
7 Zoom 6 lizard in several colors, Carolina, Texas and weightless
8 Cyclone Jig colors and sizes vary to water conditions
9 peanut butter and jelley color baby brush hog
10 Wacky worm

Here the past 5 years I've probably caught more fish on a Bandit crankbait than any other bait I use.
