Sooo... since the company has found ways to be more productive... It should keep the heavy girth of employees it has? If they are not outsourcing stuff - what is there to complain about?

Ask Ford about that...

Sean

Yep, that is what kodak did.Lay off all the contract covered workers and then turn around and outsource all the labor to local contractors at half the price.
Now all the laid off workers can work in their old jobs through the contractor and earn half of what they got before without benefits.
This will show up in the monthly reviews as :"unemployment went down by x percentage points"
The economy gets better all the time thanks to our current administration.

As long as the corporation makes more and more profit... that's good for the economy.

Did not the liberals bust up Bell once before. Seems that was back when phone calls cost about .75 per minute. Damn liberals gonna destroy our corporations.

Well, this is indeed one of those sticky issues.

It would be nice if everyone could provide really good paying jobs for life. Unfortunately, that is not the reality.

What the dems need to do is listen once in a while to Bill Clinton. He got the economy really going by globalization, and by encouaging massive productivity gains. Unfortunately, those productivity gains came at the expense of automating many existing jobs and the resultant job losses.

It kept the economy rolling, with many prices falling, and it provided many new jobs with different skills required.

The dem position should be rather than rail against job losses, they should encourage retraining efforts and similar programs, to take advantage of the new jobs being created.

The days of semi-skilled labor providing an upper middle class income have largely been over for some time. Time to learn how to be flexible and adaptable, I am afraid.

Like it or not, it is the new reality, however painful it may be to some.

I guess RubberFrog likes the way they did it in the Soviet Union. Keep 'em making wringer washing machines well beyond the point that anyone had any desire, whatsoever, to buy one.

This is a prime example of the American education system failing this country. When you can have someone 'graduate' with no better understanding of what makes the real world go around than this, we are in bigggggggg trouble!!

The stupid part is that all these job losses are part of the bill of crap they sold the stockholders on how much money they will save after the merger.

The funny thing is that they will have to hire back probably half of those people in a couple of years after they realized they are too lean.

Think about it.

Why would merging two companies require that many fewer people? They must have been terribly inefficenet in the first place. I can understand a few thousand, but gimme a break.

Trust me, they will be hiring next year.

Ken

I work Skytel, Inc. which was very profitable paging company that was bought by Worldcom about 5 years ago. Worldcom also aquired MCI. We all know what happened to Worldcom. BANKRUPTCY Declaration.

After they got rid of Ebbers and Sullivan the name was changed to MCI, hired another guy to run the company. Paying him millions in cash and stock options to see it through the bankruptcy.

NOW...Verizon has purchased MCI and the name has changed to Verizon Business. It took a year for the Verizon deal to go through after stockholders apporved it. Verizon has been up front about what was going to happen saying that there will be a reduction in force.

From the scuttle butt we're hearing the layoffs will begin this week and they will be massive and deep.

Yall keep me in mind.

Wow. I've been called a liberal. Told I like the old Soviet Union.... That's pretty stupid stuff to say about a conservative. I'm not calling anybody stupid, I'm just saying it's stupid stuff to say.
