ok, here's a general question on csm. Suppose I could get my hands on a boat load (pun intended) of 1oz csm for under dirt cheap. Would it be worth it?

If it's in pristine condition, yes

But be aware that often clearance glass isn't ideal. It may have gotten wet, have flaws in the construction, or a few other less desirable environmental conditions. If it's damaged, particularly by water, it won't wet out properly. Price new material from whoever you're buying your resin from. Then decide if the price difference is worth it.

If the seller is a reputable shop selling you the end of a roll, that looks like it's had CSM pulled off it recently, consider it. But again, why is the seller selling it so cheap? Does whatever they're telling you fit w/ what you see when you're in their shop?

Re: 1 oz csm

Once upon a time I ran across several pallets of 72" 2415, 24oz WR with 1.5oz mat. It was abandoned in place by the Navy at the end of a Mine Sweeper contract. Was In a nice dry unheated warehouse still wrapped in plastic on pallets. I loaded one pallet on my truck of about 2500 lbs. I know everyone likes the bias material like 1708 these days, but back then it was very expensive and WR was the ticket. I gave everyone I know that has restored their boat this stuff for free and they were pretty happy. I used it myself on three boats to and Its nearly all gone now.

The above is correct though if its been wet it really can't be saved.
