1 or 2 PDS bearings in my Volvo 270 outdrive

Hi Guys,

I have a 75 CC Lancer 19. I've never had it on the water and I got it from a deceased estate, so got no info regarding the boat.

From various internet searches I'm pretty sure it has a 270 on it, and I read they are all interchangeable 270-PXL_20240423_181624340.jpg280. I had seen that it may also be a 275 for the year of boat as well.. I did read some early 280 had a single pin helmet. At any rate the serial number is unreadable...

The boat has thru hull exhaust and a belt driven raw water pump on a 383 sbc. The original exhaust outlet thru the hull has been blocked off and has a fitting which the raw water intake hose was connected to. Not sure how well that would have worked but I'm wanting to use the original water intake through the leg. The fitting was not one of the transom style elbow fittings, it is a flat plate with a nipple on the inside of the hull for the raw water hose connection.

I do know I will need to replace the top bushing that is on the pivot tube which the water neck o-ring seals against as I can easily move the outdrive side to side and tell it's missing and or worn.

I want to basically service the outdrive and make sure everything is ok before going on the water. I am unsure if my bell housing is the type which has 2 PDS bearings, which would mean removing the engine to replace the forward one (from my research) or if it has the single PDS (fingers crossed). I will post some photos and hopefully someone will be able to tell me what I've got.

The U joints don't look too bad but once I pull the transmission I would replace them anyway.

Does anyone know what the deal with the prop is? Is that an aftermarket hub?PXL_20240423_151532315.jpgPXL_20240423_151454107.jpgPXL_20240422_131206988.jpgPXL_20240422_131158982.jpgPXL_20240422_131142794.jpg

Thanks in advance.

there's no way to know what parts you need until it's broken down.
just be careful, you can spend a lot of money without ever using the boat.
it sounds like you have a thru hull water intake. if it works, I would leave it. dont fix what works, being 50 years old, I'd bet
there's more pressing issues.
it is most likely a 270, it's hard to say with the missing exhaust outlet.
the prop could be fine. normally there is a cone that holds the prop, not just a nut.

That makes sense. I hear you on the spending money. It needs a new floor and all the poorly applied paint stripped from the hull as well. But I'm not doing any of that until it's proven mechanically.

I may not have explained it correctly about the thru hull raw water. The hull exhaust port in the transom mount has been blocked off with a plate. There is a nipple welded to the plate on the bilge side of the transom. Then a hose from that to the raw water intake. I imagine that may work ok at idle or low speed but on plane I think it would not be getting a good flow of water due to turbulence etc. There is also no strainer in the bilge.

The transom mount raw water intakes I have seen online are a 90 deg elbow fitting that drop out and down from this area. Perhaps I will post a photo to show it.

At any rate the top bushing in the suspension fork needs to be replaced.

Ok, on the prop. I wasn't sure if the hub had been changed from stock as I thought there didn't seem like enough room for the cone arrangement, though I am only going of internet photos.

There is a guy somewhat local to me who has a complete 270 for sale for cheap and going by the photos looks in better shape. I am going to check it out and perhaps get it if so as a better candidate to refresh.

Thanks for the reply.

if the floor is gone, the stringers and transom long ago rotted

Chris Craft Lancers have fiberglass stringers without wood, from all my research, which is one reason why I got this boat. Like I stated, I'm trying to get this mechanically sound before going any further. I know the boat has issues, probably a few I can't see or have even thought about. I will deal with them as I get to them.

I got it cheap and in todays market I could sell the engine and the performance manifolds and risers for more than I paid for the whole boat and trailer.

I purchased a 4 winns liberator for it's teak swim platform. Chopped the boat up and sold off everything I didn't want. Still have the trailer and a few odds and ends to sell. That paid for itself and half this boat. Boat went into the dumpster when my roof was replaced.

Whilst chopping up a boat isn't the most fun thing to do there was a sense of achievement. I don't mind doing it again if it comes to it.

I've never worked on an outdrive or restored a boat. I've restored plenty of muscle cars and am mechanically inclined. It's time to restore a classic muscle boat.

Thank you for your reply.
