Anyone know where I can find the 1/4" thick throttle body gasket for my Mercarb 3304-9565A1 carburetor. I'm rebuilding and from what I've read the thicker gasket is the way to go to make for cooler carb and better idle mixture adjusting.

The latest OEM Mercarb base gasket is part number 27-8079821.

The OEM gasket is going to be the thicker gasket vs an aftermarket gasket like you would get from say sierra marine, etc.

If you bought an aftermarket carb kit, sometimes you may get the thinner gasket that may affect performance, etc. So what you read was it's best to buy an OEM base gasket. Was that guyjg recommendation?

Row, Class, Part Number, SS Level, Disp, Description,

1, 27, 8079821, 00, ACT, GASKET, (latest gasket #)

2, 27, 807982 01, SS, GASKET @2,

3, 27, 701431 02, SS, GASKET @2,

4, 27, 70143 03, SS, GASKET, (oldest gasket #)

5, 27, 807982B 04, SS, GASKET-BULK @10,

6, 27, 70143B1 05, SS, BULK OF --1 @20,

Thanks for the OEM part number. But is there not an aftermarket thicker gasket? Thought I read that in one of the past posts.

Not that I'm aware of but don't mean it doesn't exist either. Maybe you can find the post in the meantime?:noidea:

Merc makes a thick spacer or wedge to help offset engine angles and tight turn engine hesitations on some engine models.

Hang in there, someone may know something more about it.:)

I stumbled onto a Mercury "adapter kit" which is simply what looks to be a 0.5-1" spacer with a gasket above AND below that mates with my same identical Mercarb, Mercury part # 807726A2. Is that what you meant in your last post re. thick spacer?

Yes! in some cases an adapter plate may be found on some V drives model or engines with a severe angle. Also on some later engines models, Merc has went to using an adapter between the carb and intake requiring 2 gaskets like seen here as an example only. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...bnbr=70&bdesc=Carburetor+and+Throttle+Linkage

Every past thread I have found on the use of the thicker gasket recommends the OEM gasket 27-8079821 is the one needed. And that makes sense to me as I know it's a good size gasket in feel. Anytime someone mentioned using a thin aftermarket gasket, they could not get any of the carb adjustment settings to work properly-if any until they put (what they are calling) the OEM thicker gasket on and all was good.

The most important thing for you to do is to use your engine serial number and use the correct OEM gasket or gaskets recommended for your engine from Mercruiser.

If you'd like to post your serial number or more info about your engine model/year, we would be able to help ensure your getting the right part numbers.;)

I have the 1989 4.3L Alpha 1, serial number OC450171. And I've ordered one of the 27-8079821 gaskets just in case the kit, when it arrives tomorrow, has a thinner one. And in general it seems there are some good arguments for having the carburetor sitting slightly higher off the intake manifold,, e.g., better fuel atomization, easier idle mixture adjusting. I even saw one post where a guy used 2 throttle body gaskets. Any thoughts on the principle of sitting higher? When I removed my carburetor yesterday the gaske was rather thin so I doubt it was OEM.

What did you end up doing?
I have been searching for a base gasket also. Only thing I have is thin and didn’t last long.
The whole center section was torn away.
