Great motors, excellent on fuel/oil. Just keep up on your service and filters.

Re: 06 vmax 250 hpdi

I gotta be a contrarian here.

While many owning and using a big block HPDI have no problems with them, and love them, many have a terrible time with them. Generally due to blown power plants. Generally due to the number two cylinder failing.

The big block HPDI is (unarguably) the most troublesome motor ever offered by Yamaha. Those within Yamaha will say so.

The core power plant started life as part number 60V-W0090-10-1S. Latest is a 60V-W0090-17-1S. Seven part number changes for the block alone. Numerous oil pump upgrades. Replacement block is priced at over $8000.00.

There is a reason that Yamaha discontinued the production and sale of this model, and it has nothing to do with the EPA.

If you can get the motor at a good price, and are a risk taker, have at it. You might want to get the engine serial number first and call Yamaha Customer Support. Ask them if the power plant has been replaced. If they will tell you the number of times, you might be surprised. Maybe you will be one of the lucky big block HPDI owners.

Good luck.

The 3.3 L block is well constructed, the problem is ethanol fuel.these alcohol fuels don't contain enough octane, run 89 not 87 or 92. Also follow the maint. Schedule to the letter, and when you hit a hundred hours get the hundred hour service, especially the high pressure pump service,if your mechanic is unaware of this important service,go to a real mechanic.enjoy the awesomeness of the 250 hp

Yamaha has not discontinued the production of the HPDI engines. They are the only 2 stroke engine still offered in the 150 and 175 hp. Yamaha is constantly updating parts, improving the product as they go.

Thanks guys for you help. I bought the boat. The engine has 241 hours. The only thing done under warranty was a s/b on the oil injection pump. Did a leak down test. Cylinder 2 thru 6 was either 5% or 7%. Number one was 9%. 149 hrs was at less than 1000rpm. Mechanic said it was a solid engine. As soon as the lakes thaw out I'm taking it out. Will update then.

Run a dose of Ringfree through the engine and clean the carbon out and # 1 will probably come up
