00 90 hp johnson tach will not work properly

Hi

I have a 2000 90 hp johnson looper and the tach is reading 1000rpm at idle and when I rev the engine up the tach goes to 0 rpm. The reason why I installed the tach is because the engine rev limiter is kicking in and I do not believe it is turning 5500 rpm. I have a 6 pole tach and I just wondering if I should change the powerpack.

I wouldn't replace anything until you get the tach sorted out, it may have nothing to do with the powerpack.

Look on back of the tach and make sure it is set to 6P (pulses) or 12 poles. If that is set correctly test your recifier/regulator.
