‘86 125 Force 2 cycle ran without oil

Looking at buying an old boat but the red alarms went off when I asked the owner if it was 2 cycle and he put oil in the gas. He said no, just straight gas. Turns out it’s obviously a 2 cycle, he only owned it for a year, there was 2 cycle oil in the boat but he didn’t know why Walked away from the deal thinking the engine might be toast. Texted him later thinking how in the world is that engine running, maybe a buddy put oil in, he said he bought it from a marina fueled up ready to go and only topped off the gas once (without oil)

What are the odds the engine is toast? If I take it out and it runs, is it ok, or could something come up later? Would having it inspected at a marine shop tell me anything?

I burn "straight gas" as well.
Oil goes in the oil tank....not in the gas

Wait…so there is a seperate oil tank? Label by the gas cap says 50:1 mix

No, there is no oil tank or blending unit on that motor.
Must mix 50:1.

Depending on how much diluted fuel mix was run through the motor, it could be junk, or it could be fine. Are you feeling lucky?
Getting the seller to let you open up the motor to inspect inside is gonna be tough. And what happens when you find damage? Or bolts break off? Who's gonna fix it? He's gonna say YOU broke it.

Just guessing, but is this on a boat of the same vintage? Bayliner maybe?

Thanks, thought maybe I had overlooked something and there was an automatic oiler somewhere.

course, ‘86 Capri. Good shape interior though, no torn seats or anything, said it was stored at a marina till he bought it. Just wish he would have put oil in it. He said I could get it checked out, but you are right, if something breaks in the process it’ll be my problem

They sell snake cams for the new smart phones.
$11 for the one that fits my Android.
Or pull the plugs and see if you can feel any damage with a long skinny screwdriver??

If they were gonna walk away they wouldn't be on here asking questions.
Sounds like there's some oil mixed in it already.
Do the tests and drain the tank and don't forget the fuel in the carbs and fuel lines.

Bought the same combination about 10 yrs. ago. Needed transom and floor/deck work. Recommend compression test and very thurough inspection.
Did double my money on resale. My labor was free
