I have a 1962 Mercury Kiekhaefer 9.8 and the recoil is shot. How do I repair this. The recoil is in the motor cover and there is a nut on the top. I would assume that one would be able to just remove this nut and the assembly would come out. However the nut just spins. Its like it's striped or something.

Help!

Re: '62 Mercury Kiekhaefer question

Does the bolt the top nut is on have a slot in it? On my 60 Ikekinhaffer<dont care if its spelled wrong) you turn the bolt with a big screw driver and then lock it down with the nut to set the spring tension. You either have a broken spring or it has poped loose inside, An easy fix. If it has broken off at the very end you can reuse the spring by heating the end and bending it to work.. Thats what I did .
