    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Ok another question. A dumb question, but I'd rather ask a dumb question than waste a ton of time and money fixing the impeller. I wanted to flush the motor a little bit before putting it back together. When I crank the motor no water is coming out of the thermostat and relief valve holes. Does...

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Tomorrows the day, putting it all back together. Can I get some help with the thermostat seal? I'm not sure what side the flange should be on. Manual is not clear. I've found pictures and videos with it both ways.

    So far so good

I've had the same experience with my lithium starting battery*. It lasts days without needing to charge. Provides a steady current no matter if it's at 80% or 40%. Just flat. And I removed/disconnected the stator and rectifier so will never need to replace those parts. The only downside so far I...

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

I may do that, I'm thinking it over. Just a matter of when, I want to get this back together and salvage the spring fishing season, and I also dont want to poke to hard at 40 years of buildup without doing a very thorough job. I see there is another plate I can remove on the side. Perhaps next...

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

They are both almost exactly the same at 160 psi. Note - the last two times I checked it was not as high. Is this bad? Should I bother ordering the parts to fix the thermostat?

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Oh boy. Let me check the compression real quick. It did this immediately after drifting for about 5-10 minutes, and before that it was running normally.

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Would a stuck shut thermostat and relief value cause it to bog down and overheat?

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Inspected the thermostat and only thing I can conclude is that it was stuck closed and the pressure relief valve must have gotten stuck closed as well or clogged, leading it to overheat. I don't know how those correlate to it going into a sort of "limp mode" before this happened. I had it full...

    How to disconnect temperature sensor?

Thanks saltchuckmatt! That worked great. Glad I asked, it's a knife connector, not the bullet I expected:

    Evinrude 7.5hp kill switch issue

When I went through kill switch drama on my evinrude I made the mistake of buying a cheapo replacement from Amazon. Turns out even the slightest voltage leak will kill the motor, which of course the Amazon switch had. Cost me about two days of banging my head on the wall before I figured it out.

    How to disconnect temperature sensor?

Can I get some help on how to disconnect the temperature sensor wires? Do you just pull it apart, or have to bend or twist it or something?

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Got the last one out! Had it soaking in PB for about two days, plenty of light tapping with the hammer, and then I put some heat on it and came back a few hours later and it slowly came out. I'll take the head cover off tomorrow. I really hope to find the thermostat is indeed shot.

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

All 14 bolts are turning except this middle one. I can see the head turning but springing back, which means it's not actually turning. I think I learned that from a Joe Reeves video. Got PB on it and now I wait.

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

I believe so. If I recall correctly they were between 140 and 150 and +-10% of each other. I checked twice, when I first started working on it and after the last time it overheated. Disclaimer: crappy amazon tester used.

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

Not even an option, the previous owner did a **** poor job on a through hull and the transom rot is up to one of the four mounting bolts.

    1987 50hp Evinrude E50TLCUD Thermostat Replacement

The problem of it idling poorly after warming up has never went away and no matter what I've replaced/rebuilt the problem persists and frankly I am just done with it. This weekend I am pretty sure it got stuck closed because it lost all accelleration and the temp alarm went off. So here we go...

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

It'll be interesting to see how AI and robotics will effect the trades. Industrial trades I can see robotics taking a nice bite out of things like welding, especially with the new laser welding. Residential I don't see much change. I know my job wont exist in 15 years. I'm not even sure what to...

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

Actually I was thinking about using this, but I'm not sure if the sensor leads can be extended. The black and yellow wire are energized if the temperature is out of range. I can hook that up to the existing siren, and as an added bonus you can monitor the exact operating temperature.

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

Yes it's good. I found out the bad way it works and have tested it since. But this reminds me of another problem with this job, that sensor is no longer available if I damage it (0386686 - Temperature Switch).
