    How kids view classic movies

Whilst watching the 50's horror classic "THEM" with my 13 yo daughter the other night there was a particular scene where Dr. Harold Medford (the old scientist guy) was looking at a black 3 ring binder turned sideways. From the viewer's angle it looked like a familiar piece of modern technology...

The golden BB (or pink slip) finally found me.

Our plant shuts down in December after 58 years. I have until the end of July. I guess 19 years is a respectable run for any single job. Still, I'm going to miss this place terribly.:( http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2011/05/25/cleo-plant-to-close-650-jobs-lost.html Time to dust off...

I've gone and wrecked the Admiral's computer.

It got hit with that stupid XP Security center Virus thing so I restored it to a few months ago and I guess that was too far. Hardly anything works now. System Restore, Help/Support and AutoUpdate will not load. Windows Update launches IE & it says that it can not display the web page. Most of...

Front main seal replacement on FWD van.

Naturally, a week before Christmas, the Admiral's van blows the front seal on the automatic transmission. Estimate to repair is around $650. That seal is about ten bucks. I'd tackle a regular transmission but the front wheel drive versions have me a little intimidated. Is this job something...

    Emergency vs. Rescue?

A friend and I were discussing an ambulance fee he paid after his wife wrecked in front of the ER and they drove out 100 yards to pick her up. I think it was around $300. She was fine but anyway, we started talking about the medivac choppers that pick you up when things get really bad and it...

    Home A/C Condenser Questions

My home's a/c condenser is a little over 20 years old and sound like it about to fly apart. Not surprising as it hasn't shut off since May. I know nothing about these things but was told that 20 years is a "good run" and I should probably start looking for a replacement. I'd like to go in...

    Dash Cams... Experience/Recommendations?

Any of you guys use a dash cam? My daily commutes are starting to warrant one. There's a ton of them on ebay in the $80-300 range but I'm not sure what to look for in a good unit. None of the one's I've seen have a name that I recognize (or trust). Thoughts? LEO cams don't count, I dont...

Are 2 stroke OB piston rings interchangeable w/other devices?

If the bore dia. and ring height are the same, could rings from another type of 2 stroke engine be used in place of the rings in a 2 stroke outboard motor?

    Fuel/Oil ratios... Why the variations?

I know the proper answer is to just do what the manufacturer says but I've seen mixtures on vintage outboards that were 30/1 and some that were 35/1... is there really that much difference in those ratios to justify an additional fuel can in my shop? I've taken in several motors over the past...

How is HP measured on an outboard?

Specifically, what type of device? I don't recall having ever seen an outboard being tested for HP and I was just wondering what type of gizmo they used. Thanks

A friend gave me this thing and dared me to get it running. Game on. I removed 4.5 lbs of dirt dobber nests and gave it a good hosing off. To my surprise it had great spark and hit a few times on ether. (Yes I know better that to use that stuff);) I did a compresion check and it had 110 lbs...

Gasket order on '73 9.8hp Merc

I'm rebuilding a carb for a coworker's friend and Im not sure of the order of two of the gaskets on the fuel pump. Why would a whole herd of goats die?

My mother's neighbor had 6 goats and an old dog (it was in a pen). Last week a storm came through and lightning hit the oldest goat as it was standing under a tree. It dropped dead in it's shadow. The other five turned up dead over the next few days, all in different areas of the field along w/...

    Best grass for heavy shade?

I have an oak in the back that used to have a swing underneath it and all of the grass around it was trampled to death. I've tried to get bermuda to stick but it just won't hold up in the shade. The only other palletized option around here is zoysia but it's pricey and I'd hate to sod the area...
