84 3.0 Exhaust Riser Gasket Leak

End of last season I pulled the manifold off to repair a small crack with JB Weld and replaced all gaskets of the manifold riser, etc, upon re-assembly. The repair has held fine. Took the boat out over the weekend and realized that my Riser gasket is now leaking somewhat well. Weird. Pulled the...

Remote sticks when going into reverse, but only when in water.

It’s still attached. I have it configured correctly I believe. The engine does temporarily when throwing it into reverse. Hold it too long in a certain spot and engine dies.

Remote sticks when going into reverse, but only when in water.

1984 Mercruiser 140, alpha one gen1. Shift cable has been replaced and used Permatex Thread sealer. Only when in water, I have to shove the remote into reverse. Works flawlessly on muffs. Shift cable has been replaced and when in water, I’ve removed the shift cable from the bracket and can...

What size bolt to hold cable anchor near manifold

Old bolt decided to snap today from normal use. This is for a Mercruiser 140 on the throttle cable where the cable anchor hold it to the side of the manifold right before it gets to the carb. Old bolt is nowhere to be found other than the part that remains in the threads.

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Hey all, got it running - bad ballast resistor wire I think! Ran a jumper (temporarily) from the ignition switched position to the + ignition coil and it started right up. Choke opened up to since the wire was still on the coil. Now with the boat starting, it now also stops when you remove...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

https://www.discount-marine.com/sites/default/files/comment/mercruiser_cote_moteur.pdf This is what my wiring looks like. Only the purple/yellow resistor wire going from the choke to the coil Edit: I now see on the diagram the purple from the alternator feeding into the choke. Duh. Will post...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

The only wire going to/from the choke, other than ground, is that yellow/purple wire going to the coil. The last owner of this boat really goofed up a lot of things, such as the trim switch, speedometer, and a bunch of other electrical stuff. I’m already trying to figure out there’s F ups, don’t...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Gauges are alive. All accessories work. Not sure how there’s a break in the circuit. The only wire, red and yellow, runs all the way back to the slave solenoid and continuity is fine. When switching to start position it has 12v. Although, the choke not having 12v in the “run” position is due...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

In the video I was showing continuity, but prior I’ve been testing voltage. Only reason for showing continuity was I thought there’s a short somewhere with the choke. With key in the run position, not attempting to start, the starter solenoid has 12V from ground to main lug. Purple gray wire...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Thanks! The meter was at 20V DC. I have the yellow/red solenoid wire running from the key back to the slave solenoid, to the primary solenoid (tested continuity and good). Purple gray wire comes off solenoid to + on coil (continuity is good). Yellow/Purple wire from the + on coil to carb...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

Further update: Found the yellow wire on the coil is leading to the choke. No shorts when testing continuity there Purple leads to solenoid. No shorts. What’s bizarre is that the engine no longer run unless you hold the key in The start position. Once you let go of the key the engine dies - I...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

With engine off, no. Haven’t tested with engine on but I’d assume so. I’ll also add that shutting off my battery while it’s running will not kill the engine.

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

My ignition only has a battery, ignition (accessories) and solenoid Mercruiser 140, year is 1984. Running Pertronix 1146A instead of points When removing the key the engine runs fine indefinitely, have to pull the wire from coil to dist to kill the engine. I did some wire tracing and...

Mercruiser 140 (1984) - What started as key no longer turning off boat has evolved into boat not starting at all

I have a MerCruiser 140. Just got back from the lake, and the key will no longer turn off the ignition. The boat ran fine this morning on muffs in my driveway, but failed to turn off when I remove the key from the ignition 30 minutes later on the lake. Killing the battery to the engine also...

A1 G1 - New shift cable doesn’t thread even though it appears same size as old one

Was having a great day yesterday until I couldn’t shift using the remote yesterday. Replacing the cable today and the new cable doesn’t want to thread for the life of me. It’s a Quicksilver replacement - the old one was the type where it threads in facing the bow of the boat, so is the new one...

No spark out of distributor - Mercruiser 140 I/O

Replaced points with Pertronix igniter and it fired right up. A little loud, but she is running and gets in gear. Pressure, temp, everything looks great. Time to gut the interior
