Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I try to do a good job of updating my threads (and appreciate all of the support you guys gave me my first year trying to get this thing sorted). I'm glad to say it's been cherry the past couple years and has needed nothing than routine maintenance. I did opt to install a Quicksilver fuel water...

'89 Merc 3.0 - electronic ignition conversion PNs

Hi everyone, I have a '89 3.0 that's still running the conventional points ignition setup. I'm wanting to upgrade to a electronic ignition conversion kit (and flamethrower coil). It's evident that we're well past the days of being able to walk into NAPA and pick up a points and condenser set...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I got the impeller rebuilt, reinstalled everything and the boat ran great this weekend. Zero issues! On the last day at the ramp just as we were getting ready to trailer the boat (what a coincidence), turning the key resulted in nothing. I’m not even hearing a click from the solenoid. Bypassed...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Finally got around to pulling the lower unit, and as expected, the impeller was trashed. I’m working on rebuilding right now. Noticed this input shaft coming out of the lower unit has some play, is this normal? Also, I forgot to put the boat in drive before pulling lower unit. Will that cause...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Thanks for the reply. I bought the boat a few months ago and haven’t put even 50 hours on it, so was hoping that I could do a full rebuild in the off season (bellows, etc). Water pressure is good at home. I ran the boat on muffs several times before this and it had no issues, and exhaust...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Well guys, I’m back chasing an overheating issue on the 3.0. I pulled what I believe is the raw water supply line (it runs from back of transom/drive area to thermostat) and it’s bone dry while engine is running on muffs (see video). Am I looking at an impeller replacement?

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Does anyone have a document showing any torque specs/replacement procedure for the VCG? I read 40 in lbs on this forum but can't find any real documentation. Nothing in my manual.

Jinxed myself. I was able to find fel pro 17900 locally. Fingers crossed I can get this patched up in time!

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

So, had a huge idiot moment. The whole continuity issue was never a problem to begin with. After replacing the points, setting proper gap, and timing, I'm so glad to say the engine runs great! Adjusted the idle and it's right on the money. I took it out for a lake test and noticed what I...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

The condenser tested fine. I’m still having the weird shorting issue where when I connect the electronic choke it basically shorts the points together. No clue.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

The condenser hasn’t been replaced yet… do you mean physically missing? It’s in the video. I also discovered that disconnecting the purple wire from the electronic choke removes this shorting issue I’m having.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I disconnected the purple resistor wires from the + side of the coil and this issue goes away, the points electrically open and close as normal.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

with everything connected (points wire attached to - side of coil), and with the points physically open, I’m getting 5 ohms of resistance. Not an open.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I’ve read those threads exhaustively and have a good understanding of how the points system works. Let me rephrase my issue. The black points wire is connected to the “spring” side of the points, I’ll call this side 1. However the minus (-) terminal of my coil is a direct short to my...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Ok. So when this black points wire is attached to the (-) side of the coil, it's shorting the points together even when they're physically open. This makes no sense to me.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I've thought about this more and there's definitely something weird going on with the points/ignition coil. I'm going to re-iterate my previous post because it was a bit scatterbrained: 1. I'm attaching an ohm meter between the two sides of the points. 2. No matter whether the points are...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I'm messing around with testing spark. It seems I now have no spark at any of the plugs, but I do have spark coming off the coil tower. Hooking an ohm meter to my points... even when the points are open, I'm getting continuity between them when my black wire coming off the distributor is...

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

I dumped gas down the carb and the engine sputters, and shakes a little bit like the cylinder is firing. However no amount of cranking can get the engine to actually fully fire and idle.

Mercruiser 3.0 diagnosis / serial number decode

Small update: The carb I attempted to rebuild let the boat idle perfectly but stalled at throttle. I was so fed up with it I ordered a rebuilt carb from guaranteed carburetors. Finally got it in today, and installed it. The boat won’t even fire now when cranking. The float bowl is filled...

And regarding the tach issue- the gauge needle is pegged out at max RPM. I’m getting 12v at the coil terminals, and the gray tach wire is attached to the (-) side of the coil. Haven’t looked into it any further
