    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I have a leak down tester, no need to make one😁. Yes throttle wide open and all plugs out

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I soaked them for about a week before I got around to assembling the engine. I’m gonna take the lifter cover off and see if they’re acting solid or adjusting

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I bought a cam/lifter kit for the engine so I hope they’re correct lol

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I tried adjusting the valves like that, it would run rough when I did the 1/4 turn then smooth out, but afterwards I would check compression and it was low….. I don’t know but it really has me pulling my hair out , I’m gonna do a leak down test when I get a chance and see what that shows

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Yes, it was cleaned thoroughly before and after machine work, I ran brushes through every passage and oil flows good from every push rod.

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

They are hydraulic lifters but the problem seems to be that they’re not adjusting themselves, they’re acting like solid lifters from what I can tell. I’m gonna pull the lifter cover and see if they’re collapsing when I preload them or not . I’ve built a ton of car/truck motors and have never had...

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I was thinking maybe the valve springs are weak? I duno what else it could be. I figured the machine shop would have checked the springs… maybe not

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

It was bored .030 over and honed to the pistons by the machine shop, I verified proper ring gap and piston clearance prior to final assembly. The cam and crank are timed correctly. It has great compression but only if I remove preload from the lifters. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

The rockers and hardware are original, they’re in good shape, I can’t for the life of me figure it out lol

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

It’s running pretty good with 89-90 lmao it’s crazy, I tested my other boat with 3.0 and is 139-140 acrossed the board up

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Everything internally is new, crank, rods, pistons, cam, gear , lifters ect

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Yes, but only like .008 taken off head, nothing off block

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Either way I can’t figure out why the valves are staying open if I put any kind of preload on the lifters. I can have maybe 20-.030 clearance and go 1/4 turn and lose compression

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Under specs in my mercruiser manual for my serial num it’s 100 min 120-130 for “new”

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

I zero lashed it till all up down movement was gone, not Couldnt spin. The stock compression is 110-130 per merc specs on that motor so I’m well in where it should be but only with the valves loose. I’ve built dozens of car engines and have never had this problem or on any of my other boats.

    3.0 mercruiser valve adjustment

Maybe someone else has ran into this, I recently rebuilt my 3.0 and it runs good but really rich no matter I did, I did compression test and only 87-90lbs on all cylinders. I back the valve adjustment to zero lash with no preload on the lifters and get129-130 acrossed all cylinders…. Are my...
