    Volvo 4.3 gl overheating

I recently had a (much less severe) overheating issue with my 5.0 GL, which I posted on this form, and received a lot of good information and advice. You might want to check that out. Since the risers got very hot, I don't think your problem is related to the engine circulation pump. When the...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Interesting. I wonder how that happened, unless the hose cap is quite low on your engine. The hose port would have to be upstream of the raw water pump in order to keep it from running dry, and the raw water pump would provide suction at that point, not pushing water out. But maybe if its low...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

If that was, indeed, the problem as I think it was, it would have been a quick fix and hardly an interruption to a day on the lake. But I did learn a lot from this and really appreciate your help.

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

I took the boat out for another test drive, and everything was fine. Idle, full throttle, pulling skiers, and everywhere in-between. Pretty much steady around 155 on the temperature gauge. When I was getting high temperatures, I'm pretty sure I was sucking air through the hose port. As I...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

This is great! Thanks for all this detail! I didn't know about that bypass passage. So, then, the thermostat housing is the only way for water to get in and out of the block (aside from the recirculating pump, which just returns water to the thermostat housing). I used an IR gun next to the...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Thanks for posting this! I believe it does still flow from there (and about that much), but I'll look closely tonight. Regarding flow rate, the indications seem to suggest that the flow is good through the raw water pump and the exhaust risers, since only the engine is hot, as far as I can...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Thanks Lou. I agree that it isn't drive related since I can replicate the elevated temperature at idle using the water port. I have not removed the exhaust elbows since I've owned the boat (~ 1.5 years), and not sure if/when the previous owner did that. I have the document you noted, and will...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Thank you Senior B. My concern is that it was getting close to 200 when on plane. I'm not sure how high it would go because I brought it back to idle, where it slowly settled to around 175. Previously, the gauge was pretty steady around 150.

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Actually, the temperature is still high when running on the water port (175+ at idle or fast idle). Normally would be 150. So that's why I thought this isn't related to the drive.

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

Planning to try this today. Hopefully its just a temperature measurement error. But since the temperature dropped ~25 degrees when going from on-plane to idle seems to suggest to me that I am not getting enough water flow through the engine. Maybe its just a red herring. I'll also check the...

Need help diagnosing temperature problem on Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J

I've got a 2009 Glastron GT205 with Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J and SX-A drive. I bought it late in the 2020 season and it has less than 250 hours on it. In the past, I've never seen the temperature gauge move very much from 150 degrees, once it was warmed up, at idle or on plane. I took it out for...

    Volvo Penta SX-A Drive Whine

I was also thinking about trying the Lucas oil on the next gear oil change -- mostly because it's cheaper, but if it might reduce the noise, then I'm definitely going to try it. Andrew W, it will be interesting to hear about how your situation progresses.

    Volvo Penta SX-A Drive Whine

saaristo and BRICH1260, thanks for your replies. saaristo, your experience is consistent with mine in that shops haven't raised an eyebrow, so this is probably common and normal for the drive. However, the post 10 years ago seemed to suggest that Volvo considered this a problem to be solved...

    Volvo Penta SX-A Drive Whine

Late last summer, I bought a 2009 Glastron GT 205 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J, an SX-A drive (1.60 gear ratio) and a Turbo 4-blade prop. It has about 185 hours on it. When it is in gear -- whether running on the hose or in the water, idle or faster RPMs -- it makes a whine loud enough to be...

Turbo prop installation mystery on Volvo SX-A

Hi, I recently purchased a 2009 Glastron GT 205 with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GL-J and SX-A drive. Since the gear oil drain plug is in front of the prop, I had to take the prop off to change the oil. The prop was extremely difficult to pull off, despite being well greased and no corrosion (I rigged...
