Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Called the company who rebuilt the carb and told them the issue. They said it just fell out of warranty a month ago but go ahead and send it back and they would disassemble it and flow check it free of charge. Great company, Fly Fishing Carburetor. Going to hang my hat on this one and rent a...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

While running it is dripping. Shutdown I don’t see any dripping. Guess I’ll pull the fuel bowl and see what’s going on.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Let the engine heat soak for 1/2 hour and now it will start, run for about 30 seconds and die. Won’t restart at all now. Tried again in 15 minutes and it will repeat the same.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Alright, it does have a little screen at the carb. You guys where right! It was clean with only a small speck of something that I cleaned out. As for the carb, at first I didn’t see any dripping and it was running good. I advanced the throttle a few times to 1500-2000 RPM and back to idle...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Will do. I didn’t take the actual fitting off but just looked inside and didn’t see anything but looking at the rebuild manual I see what you’re talking about. Small little screen ‘rock catcher’

I like it! I’ll give that a try in the morning first thing!

    More U-joint knocking?

Mine also make some noise when turning to full-stop left or right. Also if I've trimmed it too far up it will also start to make some noise. They feel rock solid so I think this is normal for extreme angles. Like others have stated, if they have any play in them at all it's time to replace. If...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Will do first thing tomorrow morning. A thunderstorm rolled in so I can't get access to it tonight. I'll report back what I find!

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

I’ll pull the spark arrester off and look inside to see if it’s dripping or anything. Should I pull the top of the carb off and look into the bowl? Not sure what’s all involved in that.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Changed the rubber fuel line when I did the antisiphon. There is definitely fuel getting to the engine now. It’s running really rich at idle. Not sure why the issue only comes up after the engine is shutdown after its hot.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Correct, after the switch replacement the dry fuel line problem (knock on wood) has been corrected. It’s acting like it’s over rich during idle. I just looked up the instructions for setting the idle mixture and it looks like I need to lock the base timing first. I’ll give that a try and check...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

I’ve been running non ethanol since the carb was changed last year. It starts and runs fine when cold. Only have the issue after trying to restart when it’s hot.

Alpha one Outdrive Trim motor works sporadically. Solenoid issue?

Had a similar issue and I changed the solenoids, both up and down, and the problem stopped. Just remember the wiring locations. Blue is up for sky, green is down for grass. Make sure you buy the marine solenoids, aka quicksilver brand as they’re sealed.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Pulled tube this weekend and it was just an open pickup with no screen or anything. Couldn't see anything in the tank. Post #21 has the latest and the issue now is it won't run correctly after warm.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

New oil pressure switch came in and I changed it. Ran the engine for about 15 minutes on a hose without a problem. Then... I turned the engine off and started to clean up my tools which took about 10 minutes. Turned the water back on and fired it up. Ran for about 30 seconds, coughed and died...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Charlie, Thanks for the recommendation but I don't believe my carb has a filter. I replaced the carb last season and I just took the fuel line off and looked into the bowl and didn't see a screen or anything. I do have a spin-on fuel filter that I replaced.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Ok so I rented a fuel pressure gauge from autozone and had to do some custom work to get a reading. Like the other poster stated I have metal lines so I used a AN adapter and made it work. Fuel pressure was at 6 PSI. Took the anti siphon valve out and it seen better days so I replaced it...

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Thanks for the link! Excuse my ignorance but do you just attach that to the pump? I tried to YouTube how to use one but all I could find was pumps with a schrader valve which I don’t have. Appreciate the help! Gives me a lot to check this upcoming weekend.

Mercruiser 5.0 dies while idling - no fuel from line

Ok my bad I now know what you’re talking about. The anti-siphon valve on the fuel tank pickup side.. that’s a good point, and would explain why the fuel line was empty when I disconnected. The gas flowed back into the tank. How do you check that and where can I buy a replacement? I’m pretty sure...
