    Help ID trim tab actuator

I’m hoping to install new seals on the ram shaft. This is on a 1985 Regal. The boat was fitted with tabs to start with but I have no idea if they’re original. The space between mounting holes on the ram is 7.5” when retracted. Anyone recognize these units?

    Loss of power and vibrations.

Forgive me if this is in the wrong forum. I’ve posted in the prop section too but I’m really not sure where it belongs There are a few things going on. I suspect related but perhaps not. This is on a 28’ regal express cruiser with twin merc 4.3 with alpha one gen one drives. Motors run well...

Loss of hole shot and performance plus vibration trouble

There are a few things going on. I suspect related but perhaps not. This is on a 28’ regal express cruiser with twin merc 4.3 with alpha one gen one drives. Motors run well. Drives got me impellers and oil in the spring. 1. On the port side when the drive is trimmed all the way down I get a...

Exhaust tube leaked. Poor idle now

So on my shakedown run the rubber tube between the exhaust elbow and y pipe spring a leak. This is on a 1998 4.3 vortek with Rochester 2 jet carb. I found out what happened by looking at the engine while running and seeing exhaust water/gas spurting out of the tube. I had probably run it this...

Drive will only spin forward regardless of control lever

Alpha one gen one. The propeller will only spin forward. It’s fine in forward fear and neutral. When I put it in reverse the propellor seems to spin forward. I just put the boat in the water and found this out. (Bone head move as this was the only thing I didn’t check before putting it in) I...

Old transducer holes and stress cracks. How to fix?

In mounting my new transducer I came across this mess of old holes and stress cracks. Stripping, inspecting and repainting the hull bottom is a project for next year. What should I do for this season with this mess? Some of the holes go through the transom and into the bilge it seems.

    Synthane washer too thick

On an alpha one gen one I needed to replace the gimbal ring and housing with a new to me used unit. I chose to reuse my old bell housing. The new synthane washers are too thick to fit in both sides. I can get one in and then the other side is mated well with 9 thou clearance. The new washers...

Oem vs aftermarket u joint retainer crown nut

I ordered an oem u joint retainer ring but it won’t fit. It is roughly 1/16” too large of an od. This is making me wonder if my outdrive is an aftermarket unit rather than a merc. There are no badges or labels inside or out. The old retainer was smooth cast aluminum and painted black, it had a...

Over tightened my water pump body

I realized that I set the torque on my water pump body in foot pounds rather than inch pounds. (That explains why I’d seemed like I was going too hard for the part) I didn’t achieve the full torque in ft lb but certainly way over did it. It is a new body, impeller and gaskets. Should I separate...

Do I really not have an oil drain plug/hose? 1998 Merc 4.3 Vortec

I might be crazy but I cannot find the drain for my oil pan. I've had my hand all under there and cannot feel a plug or hose from any place that makes sense. I've checked the Merc parts catalog which says I should have a hose but I'll be dammed if I can find it. Anyone have any idea? I think I'm...

Hi oil pressure at 3000rpm. Should I do an oil flush

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I have 1998 mercruiser 4.3 vortec’s. (Sn 0L020379). The guy I got the boat from, end of last season, put them in about 10 years ago and only put 45 hours on them. I’m not sure if that was 2 hours a year or if the boat sat unused for many of those years...

Wrench type to preload newer style drive gear bearings

I need to reassemble my drive gear bearing assembly. It’s the newer style with no spacer. I took the assembly off of the drive shaft, not separating the bearings, to replace the u joint retainer ring. I do not have a dial torque indicator and would prefer not to buy one. My click style torque...
