Painting a small boat...

sI am planning to repaint my 16' tri-hull before spring. I have searched for previous posts about painting, but am being dense. This boat has a top speed of 35 and never spends more than a day in the water (freshwater only) at a time. Could I use something like Interlux Brightside or Petit...

    '76 Johnson 85hp V4 lower unit

Ok, finally got around to pressure testing my LU. It help 10lbs pressure for more than 30 minutes and showed no bubbles in the water, Pumped it up to 15 and it (have taken water pump off) blew bubbles from a very small spot on the very top driveshaft seal. I rotated the driveshaft a few times...

    Pressure tester

Is it possible to put together a functional inexpensive pressure tester to check a lower unit? I'm sure there is, I'm just not thinking very creatively today. I know my LU is getting some water and I want to try to isolate what seal is gone or if I nee dto look at the case.

    Merc 888 Power steering

I have a Merc 888 (Ford 302/#1 drive). Would it be possible (or advisable) to retrofit power steering? The only power steering now is how much torque the drive can exert ;-)

    Carb Spacer?

I am going over my winter list of possible upgrades and repairs for my Merc 888/Ford 302 and stumbled on an idea. Would a carb spacer do any good on a boat? I'm looking more toward keeping the carb cooler as opposed to just increasing the intake length. The carb is a 2bl Rockester and the...

    Yet another Winterizing Q/Ide***

Forgive me as this year is the first time I have winterized an I/O. After changing the oil and fogging the engine, I came up with a novel way to put anti-freeze after draining it. Wanted to see if anyone saw any problems with it. On my Ford 302, the water temp sensor screws into the intake...

    Electric trailer brakes?

Anyone have any experience with these? I'm currently looking at the Fulton Ful-stop kit (formerly Amrad). The trailer is freshwater weekend use only. It seems that these would be better, less expensive, and easier to install since my truck is already wired for them. Any opinions? The towed...

Where did I goof with tilt/trim?

I just rebuilt one of the trim cylinders on my '76 888 Mercruiser 1 drive. It had gotten some corrosion under one of the seals in the brass slide and didn't work properly. Now that I have rebuilt it and replaced the seals. Now my drive goes up great, but getting it to trim down is another...

    WOT on an 888

What is the WOT rating of the 888 (302)? I have been concerned that mine will only turn 4000. Others have told me she should spin 4500. I just finished a complete overhaul and have 12 hours on the engine (first few were careful break-in). I don't know what she would originally turn since she...

    Parts for a '76 Johnson

Anyone know a source on the net where I could find head gaskets for '76 Johnson V4 85hp? Seems most places only carry '77 and newer parts...

    Need more air!

While tuning my rebuilt 302, I ran for a few minutes with the engine cover off while watching for water leaks. She picked up about 300 RPM with the infusion of cool air and throttle response was noticably better. My question is I am considering trying one of the following two ideas. I'm...

    More trim problems

    '76 Mercruiser 888, 1-R drive w/ Ford 302

This started out as a non-working trim cylinder. Have run since the drive will lower enough to use. Well, now it has started to leak down, but only about half way while on the trailer. The pump also seems to struggle as if it may have air...

    Roller Trailer Q's

I have a Load Rite Roller trailer that is in need of roller replacement. Here are my Questions-

1. The rolelrs are held on by a pin driven through the shaft. These are corroded and very difficult to remove., Is there a better way?

2. Are Poly rollers worth the extra...

    Plug wires

Ok, I'm probably opening a can of worms, but what makes marine plug wires different (if anything).

    Another tilt/trin Q

Ok, now that I have the boat on the water and running properly, it's time for me to revisit the bad trim cylinder. With the cylinders hanging free of the drive, one will extend and retract but the other on eseems frozen. When I hook them back up the drive moves ok as long as I'm not on plane...

    engine

I would go top/bottom and check for cracks in the block/heads, but I fairly worrysome about the reliability of my boat. You may be ok, but if it were mine I would rather check it out and be sure.

Anyone use an oil drain hose?

Does anyone use one of the 3-4' oil drain hoses that you leave attached? Are they ok? Just seems odd to have an oil hose laying in the bilge of my 19'er.
