Engine stalling when you give it too much throttle on take off

Have someone watch the secondary butterfly linkage when you punch it. The linkage should not move until the engine starts to turn up. If it does move try to restrict it and see if does not bog or stumble.

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

There are many tiny ball bearings in the valve. They get lost easy so be careful. If you take it apart and replace the “O” rings do not be surprised if it still leaks. If you do R&R the valve make sure that the pump does NOT operate when the drive is shifted to reverse. Good luck. Start...

    Weird overheating issues

Seperate the risers from the manifolds inspect the mating surfaces, they should be smooth with solid material where the water passages are divided from the exhaust gasses. With the riser inverted fill the water side with acetone and the manifold body as SD mentioned. If you have a friend with a...

Oil capacity and accuracy of dipstick questions, 2017 VP V6-200-J

The only thing that might help is to put the measured amount oil in the engine and either let it set an hour or so with the dip stick out or warmup the engine with the dip stick out. The hole on the bottom of the tube fitting is small and with the dip stick in place does not let the oil in the...

1989 Cobra on 4.3 liter engine makes a funny noise

If water gets in the bellows all the grease gets washed out. The bellows must always remain dry to protect the bearing. The fact that the bearing was not seated will defenitely make noise as it causes the joints to be over loaded and putting too much linear pressure on the input shaft...

    1991 OMC Cobra 2.3L - can't reach max rpm

If your engine has a spin on style fuel filter it will be a good idea to get a replacement filter. Are the spark plugs new? A good time to do as Bondo said to check the compression. The Tygon hose has nothing to do with fuel pressure and as you mentioned it is there to save the boat from a...

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

The trim limit switch on your boat was designed to last about 13 months [ one month out of warranty] that is why you need to press both buttons to raise/trim your drive. The hydraulic trim sender is seperate from the reverse lock valve which is incorporated with the shift linkage. Try to post...

    Speedometer Not Working

The hose between the drive and the speedometer may have been rodent food. That happened on a boat I bought that had been laid up for some time.

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

Look up a post from May 11 this year. The poster replaced his old style Prestolite pump with a newer style “Oildyne” style. I explained how to adapt the style with pipe fittings from the local hardware or auto store. The only parts available for your pump are some of the electrical and none of...

    4.3L Mercruiser overheating at idle

There is a small metered orifice in the thermostat housing that could be stopped up with rust. A bead blaster would be a good way to clean it out.

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

If you listen close when raising the pump changes tunes just before full up, try stopping at that point or if it goes go full up try hitting the down switch, that may keep the pressure off just enough. Also keep in mind that if the drive is full up and is exposed to bright sun the pressure in...

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

Contact West Marine with part #18-2142. Hydraulic ram. They have a close out @$51.42. Normally these rams cost over $300.00. The “O” ring repair kits are very hard to find as they are NLA. This is a killer deal and If they have them you better jump on it now!

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

The lines close to the stern should be the high pressure for up. The rams are not left and right, always the most forward port on the rams is for the up circuit. Do not look for any type of release valve. If you had a pressure gauge that goes up to 1000 lbs you could test the down circuit...

    1975 Mercruiser Tilt/trim issue

As Scott06 posted about standing on he drive to see if that helps to bring the drive down. There is up to 3000 lbs of pressure to raise the drive and only 7-800 lbs on the down circuit. The packing inside of the end of the rams get a build up of crud that most times restricts the down...

How do I safely remove anti-siphon and intake line?

2Xs with Lou, the outboard tank method is the only safe way to locate a fuel related problem.

Engine swap. Raw water intake 4.3

I prefer going through the bottom of the boat with a shut off valve. While a transom mounted pickup will work it just adds another rooster tail. Whichever one you do be sure to let water cycle through the drive to keep it cool by leaving the hose off that transfers water through the transom plate.
