    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Welcome back to what will be the longest restoration in history. Life got in the way and almost no progress was made in the past year, but this week I was able to take off the outboard and put in on the stand I made months ago. Now I’m working on getting the boat off the trailer and drawing up...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

My new trailer bunk bracket kits came in the mail today. My trailer didn’t come with the boat from the factory and I bought it from the owner of the boat yard so I could get the boat home. I was never happy with how the boat sat on the trailer. The current brackets have through bolts that go...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Spent the afternoon ripping up all the carpet that would be in my way during the restoration. The carpet on the sides I will keep for now but probably rip out in the future. Just more of what has already been found- rot. But the good news is with all the carpet out you can really see how small...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Spent some time after work getting the gas tank out. The floor under the tank is completely shot, as you can see with the screwdriver stabbed into it. I noticed this cross brace running between the flotation boxes (also rotten). I’ve seen transom knees that are glassed in vertically connected to...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

If I feel this way now I don’t know what I’ll feel when I actually start cutting! I’m actually excited to start though. The ski locker seems to be the only thing that held up pretty well. I have some teak oil somewhere in the garage that I’ll definitely use on it

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Been pretty busy this week but got a chance to get some work done. A day this week I’m going to pull the gas tank. The PO cut the fuel line and hooked up the little red tank, so I’m curious to see what was wrong with the original when I pull it out. I’m also going to start ripping up the carpet...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Here are pictures of the boat Here are the rotten bulkheads The floor follows the uppermost strake and seems to stop right past this bulkhead. In front of the bulkhead is a huge amount of foam. I think i can get away with leaving that bulkhead alone and joining the new floor to the the last...

    1990 Baja 196 ESS

Hey guys! I’ve posted on here a few times, mainly in the engine forums, but it’s officially time to come over to the restoration forum. Back in the summer of 2020 I bought this boat as a project. Years before that I watched both of frisco boater’s restorations several times, so when I bought it...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Just wanted to give an update. Spent about 3 hours trying to unbolt the shift rod so I could drop the lower unit. No combination of socket extensions worked. I removed the entire air box assembly. I tried to unbolt the vro and fuel pump to move it out of the way but the lines are so short it...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Calling it quits for the weekend. Weather has been awful all day so I finished up with the diverters and put the heads back on with new gaskets. I’ll pick up a water pump kit this week and get that done first and see if that was the issue before I snap a few bolts trying to get the water jacket...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Trust me there was no maintenance done whatsoever. You should’ve seen this outboard when I first got the boat. It looked like the previous owner used it to dredge out his slip at marina. The cooling system was FULL of mud and sand. The only reason I bought the boat was because it seems kind of...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

It’s been almost 2 years but I only had it out on the water 4 times and ran it in the tub about 10 times since. It’s a project boat so i don’t have it out much. This hasn’t been a problem since I started it for the first time this season so it could very well be that and I’m just thinking to...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

I’ll be tackling that next, since it is due for a new impeller. I’ve just been dreading that because on mine the bolt to disconnect the shift shaft from the coupling is extremely difficult to see and reach with the vro pump in the way (I’m not sure if it’s the same for all years of the cross...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Sorry for the very late response but I finally grew a pair and decided to tackle the water diverters. None of them seemed out of position and they were all in their grooves in the block, but they looked original to the 30 year old motor and were all misshapen. The bottom 2 on each side were a...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Here are the pictures I promised of the test tub and the thermostat and pressure relief valve. Everything looks fine to me but I’m not an expert lol. The O-ring behind the pressure relief valve looks fine on both sides- no rips or cracks. I will try to get the boat to the ramp this weekend, and...

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

The water level in the tank is about 2 inches above the cavitation plate. I can’t fit a taller tub under the outboard because the engine mount and trim rams get in the way. I’ll post pictures of the whole setup as well

1990 175 xp overheating at idle

Hey everyone! I have a 1990 175 xp (E175STLESE). When I woke the engine up this spring, I noticed the left cylinder bank thermostat housing was much hotter than the right when idling in our little test tank that we stick the lower unit in. I don’t have a temperature gun, but I could hold my hand...

Water where it's not supposed to be?

Hey guys me and my dad recently bought a 1989 regal medallion 185 with a 3.7 mercruiser and a 3.0 mercruiser outdrive. We hooked it up to the hose today to run the engine and when we turned on the water water started coming out by those two little hoses up by the transom. Is that normal?
