Sounds correct as long as the coil does require a ballast resistor. Some coils can run 12 volts to them like mercruiser coils and accell

everyone is pointing to the exaust when the ports in question are intake ports in the head. support the manifold and fill with water see if it runs out from the intake ports of the manifold

you unhooked the block hoses but did you probe the brass quick connect in the block? Just seeing it dribble out instead of it pouring out ???

How did you drain the system ? IF a single point system my guess the engine block did not drain completely. You can verify by unhooking the block drains and probing the fitting with a nail or screw..Almost every customer of mine with that system it usually is the port side .

if the starter tries to turn the motor over but groans it indicates fluid in the cylinders. It it turns briskly then burns up you have a different issue what company's starter are you trying to use as a replacement

The older switch is NLA and the newest shift plate has the updated switch and according to mercruiser the new switch does not fit the old plate so you would need the newer type to connert to the NC to interrupt the power to the coil to stumble the motor

Did you clean the tube with a wire or brass shotgun cleaning head? The cable should go in easily with no binding thru the guide tube Every season you need to manually apply grease to the rod to prevent binding
