The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
Ya when I pulled the temps prior, it was done after immediate shutoff, no idle, on black heads. I understand what you're saying about ir stuff and scatter, reflectivity.
Temps are great now. All is great now, after the electrical work. Never getting above the temp that I can't keep my hand on...
Update: friend's outboard mechanic buddy swept it. He replaced two coils and power pack.
I ran it five plus hours, no issues. Performance is like waaaaay better than this motor ever was, in every regard. The two coils were on the starboard side.
I got the spark gap tester but didn't do it...
Hey all. Thanks for the info. IR gun showed normal temps idling in water. Ran for very short time and pulled temps and starboard was hitting 160 and port was still no more than 125. I idled back in. Found out that a friend of a friend has tons of experience with this model, so dropped it off to...
I grabbed a spark gap tester and will do that 3/8" gap test also.
Thank you so much. Your help, for me, and others is immeasurable. When the motor started, after being torn down to nothing, I couldn't stop thinking of the selfless help you and others provide to make things possible.
Arrighty.. I got some good stuff to sweep:
Going to pull plugs anyway just to see what's up
Compression check while there
In the water, idle for a while and watch temp - looking for 120 - 140 F. Halt if hits 160.
Keep on the post-rebuild cycle.
Check temps periodically if no bog and if bog. Get...
Ya I remember doing that adjustment, also. I think the procedure was all in the official service manual (not in front of me).
Edit: another thing to check, though, to make sure something didn't jangle.
Lots of good stuff. Thanks!
Ya - I rebuilt the carbs. I remember setting the floats according to something in the manual, or some guide w/ the carb kits.
Primer lever is in correct position.
One variable is that I'm using a portable tank for break in, so I'm not going through my large filter / separator. I grabbed a new...
I just grabbed a new IR gun w/ laser. The one I had was not great @ pinpoint stuff.
Replaced water pump when did I did mid-section / lower unit work. Replaced water tube also - it was crushed - see https://forums.iboats.com/threads/water-tube-removal-question-about-flanged-end.751318/
Same w/...
Good to know and good idea.
No buzzer, but let me verify that the temp. sensors are OK.
My official service manual is w/ the boat, a few hours away. Does anyone know the heat crayon temps it calls for, in the service manual? I'd like to order some before the weekend. I got a non-contact...
Hello,
Thanks again to everyone. I am on the other side of a powerhead rebuild and 5 hours into a 10-hour break in on a '96 88SPL Evinrude. I am running a 25:1 oil mix.
Over a 10-minute period, I get a bog, where power just drops out when running 3.5k+ and in-gear RPMs won't go above 1.5k. I...
Ya I'm only ten minutes in aka just completed idle period. I just didn't know if my timing is skewed bc of the heavy oil mix and needing reset when beginning running on less oil.
First. Thanks to all of the people have contributed to this moment. My thread history tells a story and I followed all advice and I am past a rebuild of carbs, Powerhead, and so many other things.
I'm facing break in plus post rebuild stuff. Performed link and sync, running 25:1 mix, and my...
Looking to change upper water tube grommet. I got it off of the exhaust housing adapter.
I noticed that the tube was kinda collapsed-in at the flanged end
Do new ones crush in like that; as shown @ the 7 and 10 o'clock in my pic? I can't see a good pic online, but I can't imagine it's...
Also, I stopped testing when it failed the pressure test. Knowing now about the shaft wiggle thing, I will now try the vacuum test and check results.
For the 6 and 15 psi tests, I did turn the drive and prop shafts. I also actuated the shift shaft. During these, no leaks presented and it held.
No. I did the two leaking seals. Drive shaft and shift shaft.
I can do the full deal, though. The gear case one, behind the prop carrier is no fun, but it is what it is.
I didn't replace the nylon washers for the drain plugs this season. This was the first ever instance of water in the...
Heya all - Thanks for the replies. I attached a video showing how moving the driveshaft releases pressure.
The question is, is that normal? It held 15 psi for 24 hrs, if I didn't move it. I didn't remember how this was when I replaced that seal a few years back, but I have to think that it...
Had milky gearcase oil. Doing a lower unit pressure / vacuum test per the book and the driveshaft seal leaks if I wiggle the shaft around. It will seal and hold solid "in a straight position".
This thing should NOT leak at all, regardless of deflecting the drive shaft, right?
Just looking for...
